Work History

Disability Support Worker

Sequal
04.2023 - 04.2024

I returned to my former employer of 7 years, Sequal, in order to support a woman with a brain injury after a family crisis that led to a sudden increase in support hours (a need for 24/7 care). I've worked with this woman for a total of 8 years now. I also picked up hours with other clients, on a casual basis. I completed the following duties:

  • Maintained clean and organised home environments to enhance ease and comfort of daily living.
  • Assisted participants with personal grooming needs, assisting with maintaining hygiene, but also with taking pride in their own appearance and their own unique style.
  • Provided human-centred support, to enable people to meet their individual life goals, following personal plans as developed by my support team.
  • Completed training when offered, in mealtime support, epilepsy support, Social Role Valorisation, manual handling and a range of other relevant fields.
  • Planned and prepared nutritious meals and snacks to meet several dietary requirements, including supporting people with dysphagia and type 2 diabetics.
  • Liaised with my supervisors to review and improve support.
  • Coordinated doctor's appointments, exercise, recreation and family visits to maintain a schedule.
  • Administered medication to people I supported, according to strict schedules. Filled out relevant paperwork correctly, where relevant.
  • Gathered community resources and coordinated referrals to obtain services.
  • Documented services and collected required data for evaluation, through shift notes and other required paperwork.
  • Transported patients safely to social activities and appointments. I have a full license, a clean driving record and a well maintained, comprehensively insured car.

While attending to some family commitments in Maryborough, Queensland, I secured work, providing home care, hygiene support and respite for aged people still living at home. I conducted the following duties:

  • Provided domestic support, cleaning homes. This mainly involved vacuuming, mopping, making beds, dusting, wiping down kitchens and cleaning bathrooms.
  • Improved client well-being by providing consistent and compassionate care during respite periods. This support included respite for people providing care to family members with dementia.
  • Developed a strong rapport with clients and their families, fostering trust and open communication.
  • Continually pursued professional development opportunities, staying current on best practices in respite care and related fields.
  • Offered engaging activities that promoted mental stimulation and physical activity for clients during respite periods. These included attending social activities, or home based activities, like reading and crafts.
