PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Highlighted are continuing education, certifications, workshops, or training programs that have been completed and are relevant to healthcare.
  • Ward/Department: Aged care
  • Skills learnt: During my three-week placement in an aged care ward, I effectively managed my time by prioritizing tasks such as assisting patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and supporting residents' mobility at the start of each shift. For example, I worked with aged care residents, ensuring they were comfortable and their pain management was adequate before assisting them with hygiene and mobility. I managed to help with continuity of care by taking vital signs and Blood Glucose Levels (BGLs) regularly and documenting the results in patient records. I also assisted with dressing changes and monitored wound healing under the supervision of the RN.
  • Date: Nov 2022 - Dec 2022
  • Ward/Department: General Practice
  • Skills learnt: While on placement at a general practice clinic, I gained valuable experience in removing sutures and performing wound care. I ensured an aseptic technique while dressing wounds and took the opportunity to educate patients on wound healing and infection prevention. I administered flu injections, ensuring patient comfort and proper techniques to avoid adverse reactions.
  • Date: May 2023 - June 2023
  • Ward/Department: Public surgical ward
  • Skills learnt: During my placement on a public surgical ward, I honed my pre- and postoperative care skill sets, such as preparing patients for surgery by confirming NPO status, monitoring vital signs, and providing reassurance. I concentrated on wound care and infection prevention after surgery. I also worked closely with dietitians to organize meals for patients on modified diets, as well as with healthcare professionals during handovers to ensure continuity of care.
  • Date: May 2024 - June
  • Ward/Department: Coronary care unit (Jan 2025)
  • Skills learnt: During my placement in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at Joondalup Health Campus, I gained valuable experience in managing cardiac patients in a high-acuity setting. I developed strong clinical skills, including conducting A-E assessments to systematically evaluate patient conditions, ensuring early detection of deterioration. Additionally, I provided post-angioplasty care, monitoring patients for complications such as bleeding, arrhythmias, and signs of reclusion. This placement enhanced my ability to interpret ECGs, manage hemodynamic stability, and administer cardiac medications safely. I also improved my communication and teamwork skills, collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to provide holistic, patient-centered care. This experience deepened my understanding of critical care nursing and reinforced my passion for working in cardiovascular health.
  • Date: May - June 2025
  • During my final Stage 6 placement in a General Medical Ward I:
  • Supported patients with acute challenges such as alcohol withdrawal, overdose recovery, and end-of-life palliative care, ensuring dignity and comfort.
  • Conducted systematic patient assessments, gathering and interpreting relevant clinical data to guide individualized nursing care plans.
  • Gained confidence in recognizing, analyzing, and responding to changes in patient status, prioritizing safety and timely interventions.
  • Integrated clinical knowledge with compassionate practice, addressing the physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs of patients and their families.
