Surgical Ward ( 4 Weeks) | 20/10/2025- 14/11/2025

• Working in surgical wards at Bankstown–Lidcombe Hospital, caring for patients with diverse conditions, including neurological disorders, oncology, renal, endocrinology, and rheumatology.
• Observing and learning specialised nursing procedures such as chest drain monitoring, syringe driver management (including S8 medications), IV therapy, and complex patient monitoring.
• Gaining insight into nursing assessment skills, early recognition of patient deterioration, safe equipment management, and delivery of holistic, patient-centred care.
• Building confidence, developing practical skills, and strengthening understanding of safe, evidence-based nursing practice to support ongoing professional growth.

Day medical infusion clinic ( 2 weeks) | 08/092025 - 19/09/2025.

• Gained hands-on experience in a specialised outpatient infusion clinic, enhancing understanding of infusion therapy, chronic illness management, and patient-centred care.

During my clinical placement at Macquarie University Hospital, I worked in the Neurosurgical ward where i engaged in many roles:

• Patient Care: Provided tailored care for patients with neurological conditions, monitoring vital signs and addressing specific needs related to neurosurgical procedures.
• Postoperative Care: Assisted in postoperative monitoring, managing pain, and medications, and ensuring patient comfort and stability following neurosurgery.
• Wound Management: Participated in wound care, dressing changes, and monitoring for signs of infection in post-neurosurgical patients.
• Pain Management: Assisted in assessing and managing pain for neurosurgical patients, administering prescribed medications, and implementing pain relief strategies under supervision.
• Neurological Assessments: Conducted and documented neurological assessments under supervision, evaluating motor skills, sensory functions, and cognitive status.
• Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Team: Worked alongside neurosurgeons, physicians, and therapists to ensure comprehensive care plans for patients.

In addition, Macquarie University Hospital has an Outreach program where we follow the journey of patients from day surgery through recovery and onto the ward. We had an excellent time in the preoperative environment when patients were moved to the operating room and brought to the recovery ward after surgery. Here, when they come out of anesthesia, they are monitored closely. Finally, patients may be moved to a general ward for additional recuperation if they feel stable.

During clinical placement at Westmead Hospital's ,general medicine ward, I performed a range of crucial tasks:

• Provided direct patient care including monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and assisting with personal hygiene.
• Maintained patient records and documented observations using the hospital's electronic health system.
• Assisted in medical procedures like wound care, IV medication.
• Collaborated with healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care and treatment plans.
• Educated patients and families about conditions, treatments, and necessary lifestyle changes.
• Participated in emergency responses and provided support during crises.
• Supported ward management by ensuring a clean, safe environment, restocking supplies, and assisting with admissions and discharges.
• Enhanced nursing skills, clinical judgment, and communication through practical experiences in a professional healthcare setting.
