  • Responsible for safe work environment by contributing to job safety analysis, engineering technical standards, facility standards and work practices
  • Perform repairs and fault finding using hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical schematics

HEAVY MINING EQUIPMENT BREAKDOWN MECHANIC (drill rigs)

  • I perform major component change outs, such as engines, hydraulic pumps, air compressors, transfer gear box, transmissions/tramming motors, cylinders, , hydraulic control blocks, directional control valves, track frames, down rollers, idler segments/wheels, telescopic seals, track guard and tracks change out, cylinder head gasket, bucket pins, bearings. In doing major component change outs, this is the procedure used:
  • Safety – machine must be parked on level ground with parking brake engaged, all wheels chocked, hydraulic pressures released, main switch isolated and locked/tagged.
  • Machine must be jacked for certain repairs: removing of track idler wheels, down rollers, oscillation bushings, working on track frame, track chain, etc.
  • Remove components that are in the way of actual component needed to be removed (for instance, radiator to get to the engine) to get access to the component
  • Remove all hydraulic hoses attached to the component, remove cable harnesses if attached
  • Slack mounting bolts and suspend the component before finally removing mounting bolts, remove the faulty component
  • Clean the mounting surface, fix new seals, fix new component with crane or lifting gear, put mounting bolts in place, torque the mounting bolts to manufacturer specification, fix back all cable harness and fix back all hoses and pipes with new seals, as well as re-fitting other components removed for access

FIELD SERVICE TROUBLESHOOTING (drill rigs)

  • Consult machine operator to know what happened when the breakdown occurred
  • If it appears to be an engine problem, first step is to check engine oil, coolant and fuel levels, if ok, then check electrical system using ET (Electronic Technician) to diagnose the problem, when problem is detected, do rectification works according to manufacturer’s specifications
  • If it appears to be a hydraulic problem, first check hydraulic oil level, then check hoses for bursts, check cylinders and pumps for leakages, check pump pressures if they are within manufacturer’s specifications. Burst hoses are replaced, leaking cylinders are replaced or resealed, and leaking pumps are replaced or resealed. If pump pressure is not within manufacturers specifications, adjust relief valves or pump regulators
  • Use SIS (Support Information System) or manufacturers service manual in gathering information and carrying out repairs to specifications
  • Serious electrical problems detected are referred to the electrician
  • If a rig track has come loose from its idlers, uncouple track at master link or pin, jack the rig to get access to the track, arrange it and re-couple it on the idlers, rollers and final drive, then re-couple the master link.
