Anaesthetic Nurse & Scrub/Scout Nurse
(6-month rotations in each role; worked independently with indirect supervision after completion of CSATs)

Anaesthetic Role:

• Assisted anaesthetic doctors in administering anaesthesia (general, regional, spinal) and securing airways, ensuring patient safety and comfort throughout the surgical process.
• Monitored patient vitals, including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and respiratory status, adjusting interventions as needed during surgery.
• Assisted in the placement and management of arterial lines, central venous lines, and other invasive procedures, ensuring optimal monitoring and patient care during and after surgery.

Scrub and Scout Role:

• Independently scrubbed in for a wide range of surgical specialties, including general, obstetrics and gynaecology, and orthopaedic surgeries.
• Prepared sterile instruments, ensured all surgical tools were accounted for, and assisted with draping, positioning, and maintaining a sterile field during procedures.
• Supported the surgical team by anticipating needs, passing instruments, and ensuring smooth procedural flow, always adhering to strict infection control protocols.

Patient & Family Support:

• Provided emotional support to patients and their families during the surgical process, addressing concerns, providing reassurance, and helping them navigate through what can be a stressful and challenging experience.
• Offered clear communication to patients and families regarding surgical procedures, expected outcomes, and post-operative care to ensure understanding and alleviate anxiety.

Team Collaboration & Care Planning:

• Communicated effectively with healthcare team members to plan, implement, and refine treatment strategies, always adhering to ACORN standards for anaesthetic and surgical care.
• Contributed to multidisciplinary discussions to ensure holistic, patient-cantered care that aligns with best practice guidelines and clinical protocols.

• Conducted thorough patient assessments such as vital signs, respiration, neurovascular for the patients returning from post-anaesthetic ward to surgical ward to identify changes in condition, promptly notifying physicians and initiating appropriate interventions when necessary.
• Administered medications safely according to established guidelines while closely monitoring for side effects or adverse reactions requiring intervention.
• Collaborating with multidisciplinary team like physio, pharmacy, dieticians, doctors, and planning care for the patients
• Attend patient's ADLs, wound care, catheter care and pain management
• Document the assessments and care provided in different charts as per organisation along with verbal and written handovers

• Placement in Emergency Care Centre for 160 hrs

• Placement in Medical ward for 80 hrs

• Placement in Paediatric Ward for 120 hrs

• Placement in Mental Health Ward for 80 hrs
