Project Name: Valuable photocatalyst from algal wastewater

  • Synthesis of valuable photocatalysts (TiO2) from algal wastewater.
  • Attainment of 88.7 % and 28 % atmospheric acetaldehyde and nitrogen oxide photocatalytic removal, which is comparable to commercial P25.
  • Achievement of 99.8 %, 66.7 %, and 96.9 % turbidity, chemical oxygen demand, and total phosphorus from algal wastewater.
  • Successful application of sludge TiO2 in photocatalytic concrete technology.
  • Successful collaboration with Prof. Jong-Ho Kim (School of Chemical Engineering, Chonnam National University, Gwangju, 61186, South Korea).


Project Name - Visible light active photocatalysts from dye wastewater

Project Synopsis:

  • Facile template-free synthesis of anatase TiO2/g-CN composites from sludge.
  • Increased light absorption in both UV and visible light spectrum.
  • Enhanced photoactivity due to appropriate narrowing of energy bandgap.
  • Superior NO oxidation and nitrate selectivity by the as-prepared composites.
  • Amendment of the effective surface area of anatase TiO2/g-CN nanoparticles from 50 m2/g to 154 m2/g through facile hydrothermal treatment.
  • Superior atmospheric nitrogen oxide removal of 32.44 % was attained, which is substantially high compared to the commercial products.
  • Considering circular economy, the synthesized photocatalysts in this project were expected to generate a revenue of 4,500 AUD per day from a medium-scale wastewater treatment plant.
  • Successful collaboration with Prof. Jong-Ho Kim (School of Chemical Engineering, Chonnam National University, Gwangju, 61186, South Korea) and Dr. Young-Si Jun (Department of Advanced Chemicals & Engineering, Chonnam National University, Gwangju, 61186, South Korea).


Project Name - Synthesis of lithium ion sieve

Duration: 2021-2022

  • NPRP 12S-0227190166, Qatar National Research Fund under its National Priorities Research Program.

Project Synopsis:

  • Successful preparation of lithium-ion sieve from sludge generated TiO2.
  • The adsorption capacity of H2TiO3 from dye wastewater sludge was 35 mg/L.
  • After 72 h of acid treatment on sludge H2TiO3, Ti4+ dissolution was below 3 %.
  • In competing cation enriched model solution, substantial Li+ adsorption selectivity is achieved.
