Schools have individual visions on what they believe education and learning should and will look like. After teaching Prep/Year One full time for for 3 years and working casually as a supply teacher for 18 months I have developed my own personal philosophy of teaching. Ever since I was very young I had always dreamt of being a teacher and passing my love for school onto children I would encounter in the future. When I think back to my years at school, the teachers that stand out the most are the ones that were enthusiastic, happy and created fun, engaging activities and lessons. I strongly believe that as an Educator it is my responsibility to create a love for learning for all children. I strive to ensure that when I interact with children I am always enthusiastic and happy, to create a welcoming and supportive environment. A love for learning is essential in preparing students for the life-long learning journey they are just beginning. Creating and maintaining supportive learning environments is one of the most important parts of the teaching profession. Children are more willing to learn in an environment where they feel valued, supported, safe, included and welcomed. I endeavour to provide an environment that is intellectually challenging and emotionally nurturing. I believe building relationships with students to identify ways in which they best learn, personal interests and strategies to support their range of diverse learning and thinking capabilities is an essential tool to provide quality, holistic learning.
Education is a profession that is heavily based on people working together to achieve the very best results for students. I believe that engaging and communicating with parents, carers and colleagues is essential in achieving these results. I strive to create positive partnerships with parents and carers through open and frequent communication through verbal conversations, emails, interviews, reports and phone calls. Engaging parents and families in the educative process is an essential part of building a positive and supportive learning environment for all children. I also feel very strongly about teamwork and building partnerships with colleagues. I previously worked with a cohort consisting of five teachers. Working with such a large teacher/teacher aide cohort has assisted me to develop appropriate communication skills when interacting with people of various ages and personalities. I am always actively involved in decision making and goal setting to ensure the team achieves positive results and reaches targets.
Finally I believe that it is important to frequently reflect on my teaching and learning. The teaching profession requires a high level of flexibility as changes are made continually. I constantly evaluate learning and make changes where necessary to lessons and learning sequences to improve teaching instruction, engagement of students and retainment of knowledge and skills. Teaching is a career which offers the opportunity for life-long learning. I believe positive partnerships is essential in a school environment. I regularly engage in an array of professional learning opportunities. These development workshops provide valuable information that I implement within the classroom. I also attended weekly staff meetings, cohort meetings, professional development days, moderation sessions and performance plan review meetings to interact, work and communicate effectively with colleagues.
