  • It caters for a complex group of mental health disorders on the one floor inclusive of eating disorders, geriatric mental health and general mental health
  • I have been involved in the care of patients with eating disorders which include anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa
  • My role has been to provide meal support, ensuring an appropriate environment for meals that is sensitive to the needs of clients with eating disorders
  • Having meals with the patients ensuring healthy routine of meal times is adhered to
  • Monitoring the patients’ food intake and ensuring that the patients comply with the meal plan set by the dietician
  • Monitoring and observing any eating disorder behaviours that need to be eliminated and discussing these with the patient during post meal times and the treating team during ward rounds
  • Ensuring that the patients are within my sight for the next hour immediately post main meals and 30 minutes post snacks, this is to ensure that they do not purge or exercise after meals
  • Conducting 1:1 sessions or group sessions to give the patients time to reflect on the meal they had and explore any eating behaviours noted during meals and explore any eating disorder thoughts and their fears and insecurities
  • Exploring coping strategies with the patients for any emotional distress during meal times
  • Monitoring the patient’s vital observations inclusive of temperature, blood pressure and pulse checks 4 hourly during the first week and thereafter frequency is determined by their physical health as patients with eating disorders are malnourished and are prone to refeeding syndrome
  • Daily Electro Cardio Grams to monitor their heart activity
  • Twice weekly weights to monitor the patient’s progress, ensuring that they have not water loaded or hiding any weights on them to ensure the correct weight is obtained to determine effectiveness of treatment
  • Administering medication as prescribed and per rising need medication when required
  • Administering bolus nasogastric feeds to patients who did not meet the agreed upon meal intake after all main meals and snacks
  • Commencing overnight nasogastric tube feeds in the evening at the prescribed rates
  • Recording the patient’s progress in their progress notes and the medications given, vital observations and intake after each shift
  • I have nursed the elderly with dementia, depression, bipolar affective disorders and schizophrenia
