Clinical Placement

Clinical Placement 1: Aged Care Facility

Bene Aged Care Italian Village, St Agnes

(04/10/2022 - 30/10/2022) (160 hours)

My first clinical placement provided a strong foundation in delivering person-centred care to elderly residents, many with complex chronic conditions and dementia. I developed essential nursing skills such as:

  • Assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Monitoring vital signs and reporting abnormalities
  • Supporting residents with dementia using calm, respectful communication
  • Practising infection control and safe manual handling techniques
This placement taught me the importance of empathy, dignity, and patience in caring for vulnerable populations.

Clinical Placement 2: General Medical Unit

Modbury Hospital, 2E

(15/07/2024 - 11/08/2024) (160 hours)

During my second placement, I worked alongside registered nurses caring for acutely unwell patients with a wide range of medical conditions, including respiratory, cardiac, and endocrine disorders. My responsibilities included:

  • Conducting physical assessments and recording clinical observations
  • Assisting with wound care, pressure area prevention, and medication preparation under supervision
  • Supporting patients with mobility, hygiene, and nutritional needs
  • Communicating effectively with the healthcare team and patients’ families
This experience deepened my understanding of clinical reasoning, prioritisation, and the fast-paced hospital environment.

Clinical Placement 3: General Medicine

Lyell McEwin Hospital, 2A

(28/01/2025 - 23/03/2025) (320 hours)

My third placement further built on my medical-surgical nursing skills, with a focus on patients with complex, multi-system health issues. I developed increased confidence in:

  • Performing head-to-toe assessments and monitoring for clinical deterioration
  • Charting and electronic documentation (e.g., progress notes, fluid balance)
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams during discharge planning and other
  • Recognising early signs of infection and escalating concerns appropriately
This placement reinforced the importance of evidence-based practice, critical thinking, and holistic care.
