Work History

Owner and Manager

Escape Kayaks
- 01.2023
  • Production management in the Roto-moulding industry for nearly 25 years. I owned and managed, did most maintenance and sales too for Escape Kayaks. As a local roto moulder of sit on top kayaks we outlasted the rest of our industry against importers of Chinese made products.
  • I designed and built gas fired ovens, moulds and the associated jigs and machinery as a metal worker and have a pedigree in design and innovation with a global reach. I designed machinery and products for roto-moulding as a contractor including small boats and kayaks. I designed the seats for our sit-on-top kayak and the designed was taken up by some Chinese importers and is used to this day.
  • I was approached by Chinese investors with a view to moving to China and training others in the industry but preferred to remain here and attempt to solidify our position against the imports which were rapidly gaining ground as the Australian roto-moulding industry was under pressure. Much of that was due to large store chains of camping giants whose importing and buying practice was a gargantuan competition when combined with their advertising reach.
  • We produced a better product and provided excellent service and we remained very popular and with a substantial loyal customer base in an industry which does not except such a thing. As a sole trader I was under enormous pressure to produce and market our product and rising costs along with industry disruption since the COVID year changed our world considerably and my health and last marriage collapsed in succession.
  • My cardio health became an issue and I retired out of necessity by 2023. That is when I closed Escape Kayaks which had for more than two decades been a leading manufacturer in Australia. We exported for a time to Queensland and New South Wales. We imported our own design seats from a Pakistani manufacturer after designing them. Eventually we imported seats and paddles from Chinese manufacturers and I have an excellent relationship with Chinese industry in general. I did not blame them for taking advantage of a market which had been opened to them and laid bare by our own government and entrepreneurs.

  • I've been self employed most of my working life. In 42 years I have worked successfully as an office machines service technician, metal worker in fabrication of sheet metal moulds for the roto-moulding industry and a professional fireworks operator. I have been a licensed shotfirer and pyrotechnician. I once owned a small farm and was active in the farming and logging communities of Pemberton and Manjimup for ten years and contributed entertainment and logistics planning for the local agricultural and other shows and events during much of that time.
  • I live with a companion rabbit. My rabbit is an ESA according to a doctor's letter of confirmation. I have experience in animal husbandry, sheep, cattle, pigs, turkeys and chickens. In the preparation, care, sowing where appropriate and harvesting of grain crops. Vegetables and orchard care. Horticulture, particularly of an organic standard is a personal interest. I have been involved in all aspects of farming, including the secondary industries which rely on it, such as juicing and bottling.
  • I've got an atypical mix of experiences and a holistic approach to all things which makes for someone well suited to an environment with diverse but intertwined concerns.
  • I am well educated and also well travelled. I've been married to Southern Europe, to Scandinavia and to the East. Pakistan in particular. I am a fair, empathetic and considerate person. While I'm not religiously inclined, I have had a few and am a Muslim revert since 2011. With this and experience in other cultures, including our indigenous friends. Warmun Community and I have an old long standing friendship since the years I used to travel to the Kimberley and Pilbara for my fireworks company. I count the matron and husband of the tribe as friends and allies.
  • I haven't got a strong opinion on whose culture is 'superior' and tend to move very easily across racial, religious and cultural lines. I love humanity and have a passion for traditional cultures and societies. I am conservatively inclined by today's standards. Yet I am not judgemental of progressive ideas so long as the same values as our generation settled on already are respected. Namely that nobody has the right to impinge on others' including those of a community to set public standards.
  • I hope this gives some answers direct and intuitively to the sort of questions which might arise to a prospective employer. I remain at your service if any further information is sought.
