I am enthusiastic and driven to continue gaining knowledge, and to make contributions within the Health and Medical fields, as well as to society in general. I believe my personal interest and background in the Performing Arts gives me unique communication and people skills, varied perspectives, and also aids my critical thinking. My combination of passions, skills, and goals makes me an asset to any group and team.
At the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, I was able to immerse myself in a hospital environment while also liaising with patients. I helped organised events to support and uplift patients, such as music performances and organising wig fittings. Creating meaningful connections with patients is an important and fulfilling aspect of the program. As an aspiring immunologist/researcher, engaging with patients is an ideal way to better connect and understand people's needs and variety of experiences.
As a Museum Educator at SEALIFE Aquarium Sydney, I provide engaging and informative talks and tours to a range of audiences ranging from primary school students, corporate organisations, and groups with disability/accessibility needs. Topics vary often, combining information regarding the biology of our organisms, our conservation and curation programmes, as well as real life applications of sustainability. I have presented additions and suggestions to our educational programs to our management, and provide regular updates. Some extra tasks include helping the other teams, such as testing the water quality and assisting the keepers with animal feeding/nutrition.
Being a volunteer at the Museum of Human Disease has given me a chance to expand my knowledge and interest in disease, as well as allowing me to gain insight into the the history and modern reality of working in the Health industry. Volunteer work includes working with our specimens, such as observing and transcribing macroscopic pathology, while also organising and categorising specimens.
Due to the high demand of SARS-CoV-2 testing in Australia in 2021, I was able to work as a Lab Assistant testing oral and nasal swabs for the COVID-19 disease. At the time, I was enrolled at University of Melbourne in Science, which enabled me the opportunity to work at the Lab. As a Lab Assistant, I would prepare collected samples and apply PCR testing, as well as working with our manager to troubleshoot. This was valuable first-hand experience of a clinical environment and of professional lab processes.
Although I currently study and work in science, I always have had a admiration and history with the performing arts. I have been able to represent Oceania in the Tokyo festival, sung opera for Pinchgut Opera Company and Sydney Chamber Opera as well as tour Europe with a state band. Although I am not practicing music like I used to, my experiences enables for creative and diverse thinking that enhances my ability to work scientifically.
