National Disability Coordination Officer

VERTO
08.2022 - 11.2023
  • The National Disability Coordination Officer Program was funded by the Department of Education to drive change so that people with disability have equitable opportunity to access, participate and achieve their goals in tertiary education and subsequent employment. NDCOs were involved in a broad range of projects at a national, state and local level, and worked strategically with stakeholders to address the systemic barriers experienced by people with disability engaging in tertiary education and subsequent employment.

PROJECTS

  • NDCO Reference Resource Guide- This activity created a generic “Pathways and Connections” guide that can be modified, or updated, to identify specific service needs of each state or region. Also developed was a poster of resources to support people with disability seeking to transition and participate in tertiary education. The poster was adapted from a previous NDCO resource but was updated with QR codes to link with the latest information and that it met with accessibility guidelines. These resources were developed to assist in supporting the move to tertiary or higher education, subsequent graduate employment or supported employment by informing stakeholders of the services and programs available.
  • NSW/ACT Apprenticeship and Traineeship Advisory Group (DATAN)- This activity was aimed to replicate the Melbourne Apprenticeship Disability Advisory Network (MADN) within NSW and the ACT. NSW NDCOs identified stakeholders to be invited to establish an advisory group which aims to strengthen links, promote awareness, and advocate for apprenticeships and traineeships as a pathway for people with disability. Working with employers was also an important focus of this activity.
  • National Benchmarking for Best Practice in Universities- This activity aimed to fill an identified gap by providing current data across Australian universities to inform best practice within universities. NDCOs collaborated with the Australian Tertiary Education Network (ATEND) to develop a survey tool to benchmark disability in universities. This activity collected both qualitative and quantitative feedback and began a bi-annual process of reflection and analysis followed by action within the higher education sector to enable disability advisors/liaison officers and staff to be empowered and continue to build best practice. The survey was sent to all universities with 29 universities completing the survey and a survey report was completed and given to ATEND.
  • Regional Stakeholder Engagement- This activity to ensure the strong connections formed over the duration of the NDCO Program are maintained moving forward beyond the Program finalising. Due to annual natural disasters, Covid and organisational changes, including at the NSW Department of Education and TAFE, several issues and barriers have arisen leaving stakeholders lacking transition information. This activity aimed to fill these gaps.
