- I actively worked with Department of Transport to optimize mooring site designation in the Swan and Canning Mooring Control Area. I worked as a team with my other group members. The issue of the project was that the Swan and Canning Mooring Control Area was outdated, relying on legacy approaches that do not reflect modern standards of spatial efficiency or safety. This outdated method has led to inefficient use of space, delays in boat allocation, and increased safety risks due to overlapping mooring zones and poor layout planning. Therefore our project introduced a modern solution using QGIS software to perform location allocation of boats, focusing on three critical areas: Bull Creek, South of Perth Yacht Club, and Chidley Point. By applying accurate Swing Watch Radius (SWR) calculations and leveraging geospatial mapping tools, we developed optimized mooring layouts that maximize safe vessel spacing while adhering to environmental and regulatory requirements.
- In response, My role and contributions to the project included:
- Geospatial Analysis: Collected, cleaned, and processed spatial data layers (shorelines, existing moorings, depth zones, restricted areas) for integration into QGIS.
- SWR Calculations: Applied accurate Swing Watch Radius formulas for various vessel sizes to define safe mooring boundaries and buffer zones.
- QGIS Modelling: Digitized existing mooring areas and performed location allocation using spatial tools like proximity analysis, spatial joins, and buffer operations.
- Custom Scripting: Developed expressions and geoprocessing models within QGIS to automate parts of the allocation process based on user-defined criteria.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Liaised with the Department of Transport and local yacht clubs to ensure the model reflected operational needs and regulatory compliance.
- Output Visualization: Created clear, annotated map outputs to support presentation, decision-making, and stakeholder communication.
- Documentation and Reporting: Contributed to the final project report, documenting methodology, challenges, and recommendations for future improvements.
