I recently completed a 120,000-word novel, Pilgrim Champions (The RIP)
This thematic structure is based on landmark cultural research that identified the specific sensory elements of the Australian character (Ingenuous & Mainstream) and, separately, the American national character.
We term these sensibilities cultural imprints. These powerful subconscious predictors of community-derived behaviour are described in the story as “Inherited Spirits.”
The story is set in Melbourne and at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay, The Rip, during the Depression and Stock Market Crash of 1893. The protagonist, Sam, an Australian, must make good on his son’s dying wish by sailing out to the treacherous Rip. The second protagonist, Louisa, an American gold miner’s daughter, is a political advocate determined to see her secret Goldstar Dream ‘shine in a ring of golden light.’
The story contrasts the polar opposite motivations of Sam as an Australian in how he deals with love and redemption compared to Louisa, as an American in how she pursues a selfless quest to secure and ‘protect’ neverendingly freedom for current and future generations.
