Motivated, dynamic, and experienced Aboriginal communities & social performance practitioner with formal university qualifications and over 15 years of practical experience in the mining industry, including environment , social & governance, I am familiar with challenges of working in remote areas & Aboriginal communities, particularly in the Pilbara region. I have strong connections to Pilbara culture and communities, with positive relationships across 11 language groups. In community work I am continually recognized for active listening & action. I have a proven record with engaging stakeholders at all levels of management. I am in project management & the use of many tools & adept at identifying and capitalizing on business opportunities related to community, heritage, environment, land, & sea.

  • Six month Acting manager, heritage and environment environment teams, including managing budgets, while RRKAC restructured to Caring for Country.
  • Maintained relationships with mining and government proponents through the restructure changes.
  • Planned, coordinated & managed the logistics for survey & monitoring work.
  • Mentored heritage and environment workers to perform their duties competently by low literacy and numeracy skills, by developing easy to use pictorial guides.
  • Provided support & guided RRKAC elders who attended advisory committee meetings

Pilbara National Re-Dress Coordinator

  • Established KAC’s heritage and environment programs, including training and mentoring of members.
  • Developed the capacity of KAC to deliver on scheduled heritage and environment surveys.
  • Developed and implemented remote area safety policy and procedures and compliance for the business
  • Stakeholder engagement, developed and maintained constructive relationships with the Kariyarra members, government and mining proponents, including consultants.
  • Leveraged support from mining proponents to enhance the capacity of KAC team
  • Preparing monthly reports for CEO & KAC Board of Directors
  • Experience in following regulations and regulatory procedures, eg isolated artefact finds, investigating cultural legacy sites and removal of incorrect site location from the Aboriginal Sites Registry; and locating the correct site.
  • Leading a team of KAC board of directors through two social impact assessments.
  • Lead a team of KAC members through the process of developing several social surrounds projects.

Key Achievements:

  • Successful expansion of heritage, environment, and land & sea group.
  • Responsible for $5.2 million in earnings generated by the KAC in 2023/2024, (the income was split to support wages for community members and for KAC wages and operational costs).
  • Successfully wrote four proposals to DPLH for protection, promotion & care of cultural heritage (value over $1mil).
  • Using a business model, successfully negotiated consistent charge out rates, for heritage, environment and land and sea work.

  • Social performance- used community development as a strategy for projects with First Nations communities in the east and west Pilbara (Rio Tinto’s iron ore footprint)
  • Worked in a small team with a General Manager and Manager to develop a community risk assessment template, for outdoor events (at Rio Tinto), which was used for wider use and application across Rio Tinto.
  • Native Title Agreements- Played a pivotal role based on relationships, brokering one major commercially binding native title agreement to be signed (for rail cartage of iron-ore to two ports)
  • Managed Aboriginal communities & social performance plan. Supported both internal and external parties in Aboriginal community relations
  • Managed and supported work by leveraging donations and in-kind support especially for the remote cattle station Ngurrawaana
  • Developed a communications plan, at the request of the cattle station
  • Aided with development of remote area safety protocols
  • Positively promoted their hard work on social media at their request, in order to generate a volunteer list for mustering (500 offers from other cattle station workers)
  • Volunteer photographer for mustering
  • Negotiated and developed Land Access Procedure for Eastern Guruma on Hamersley Station
  • Managed relationships between Rio Tinto and Aboriginal language groups in the east and west Pilbara
  • Developed mining on Country publications with land-connected people (e.g., Why Agreements Matter; and Gender Matters)
  • Designed and used oracle-based software, SAP & Xero for reporting; & worked with Rio Tinto computer coders to develop profiles for reporting Aboriginal engagement by age & location

Key Achievements:

  • Won a Western Australian Department of Fire and Emergency (DFES) safety award for successfully promoting the use of battery and solar lights at Wakathurni after the deaths of several children in a caravan fire
  • Played a leading role in the success of striking the multi-million dollar future acts deal, Rio Tinto-Ngarluma mining agreement
  • Published a book as part of the Burrup Peninsula Series, relating birds to rock art, ‘The Burrup and Beyond- Birds and Rock Art’, co-authored with Ken Mulvaney
  • Nature photography, in particular birds (published a community reference guide on local flora and birds for Wickham)
