This is a global role on the Group Health, Safety and Security team leading global safety programs. The role is a 12 month contract role, spanning nearly 2 years. Key achievements include:

  • Global coordination of BHP’s Fatality Elimination Program (FEL), leading a global network of FEL leaders and subject matter experts to implement step change control improvements, for BHP’s top 10 fatality risks.
  • Led the fatal risk and critical control simplification project, redesigning the global occupational safety risk framework to a hazardous energy and damage timeline control model.

The Group Head of Safety Role (made redundant in 2023), led the safety function and strategy for Newcrest's mining operations, projects and exploration. Key achievements include:


  • A start-up role to reconfigure the safety function into a global Centre of Excellence (CoE), with a revised service delivery and business partnering model.
  • Updated and streamlined safety performance standards, the operational risk management framework, the critical control management process, and learning from incidents.
  • Developed, initiated, and hosted communities of practice for each Major Hazard to develop major hazard performance standards for the group, in consultation with each community.
  • Based on deep dive analysis of incident experiences, developed major hazard control improvement programs for Falls, Vehicle Interactions, and Lifting Operations, implemented by working groups across the business, to significantly reduce the number of high potential incidents involving these hazards.

  • Led risk management, management of change and assurance program, for the construction and fit-out of two trade training and repair centres, including relocation and installation of fixed and heavy mobile mining plant, that ensured zero incidents and non-compliances, for the future fit academy project.
  • Performed detailed strategic risk analysis and developed the strategic risk management strategy, including actions for BHPs maintenance redesign project, engaging with regulators, unions, operational leaders, trainees and affected workforces, across BHP’s Minerals Australia, resulting in reduced integration time, zero non-compliances, no industrial disruption, and no incidents, despite significant identified risk issues.

  • Working with other executives and project partners, to overcome the seemingly insurmountable challenges, of the Carmichael Coal Project, achieving all internal and external project approvals, responding rapidly to a constantly changing project delivery model, approval requirements and disruptions by issue groups.
  • Developed HSS, quality and core process management standards, for the business, including the Carmichael Coal Project, achieving accreditation with ISO 45001, ISO 9001 and compliance with mine, rail, port legal requirements.
