Background
Family commenced business in 1953 with a retail outlet in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea and expanding to import and wholesale distribution. .In 1959,, a branch was opened in Madang followed by others in Port Moresby, Mt Hagen, Goroka, Lae., and Mumeng by 1969. Other activities included Cocoa Plantations, Coffee milling, Transport and property development. PNG was given self governing status in 1973 where the patriarch, Mr Ping Quan Hui was awarded an OBE by the Queen for services to Papua New Guinea community and to the economy. He retired to Australia in 1975. The businesses were sold to relatives managing the companies and other investors by 1975 with the elder daughter remaining in wholesale business in Port Moresby until 1998.
Family involvement in PNG continued in the form of consulting, advice, and assistance to relatives, friends and businesses associates. Involvement in politics became a necessity in 2001 to offset undesirable and unscrupulous forces at work in the PNG political landscape.
