Work History

Assistant Protection Officer

UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES

  • As an Assistant Protection Officer working in the legal protection unit at the Australia Multi-Country Office I enhance and uphold the protection of refugees, asylum-seekers and stateless persons across 16 states including New Zealand and the Pacific.
  • I draft briefing kits, updates for Bureau and HQ, meeting briefs, speaking points, presentations for a variety of audiences, press releases, public statements, non-papers, legal submissions, material for training purposes and more.
  • I undertake research, interpret, analyze, monitor and review developments across the region and the wider Asia Pacific including on political, legal, operational and media and ensure any developments are strategically included across the board including updating the senior management team.
  • As part of my responsibility in monitoring immigration detention, I undertake detention monitoring interviewing refugees, asylum-seekers, and stateless persons held in immigration detention.
  • I undertake close stakeholder consultation developing strong relationships with key senior interlocutors including with governments, including on the 2023 GRF and ongoing pledge implementation.
  • I facilitate the referrals of the emergency resettlement program for Australia and New Zealand, liaising between UNHCR colleagues in the field and on challenges that may arise with the administration of the program

  • I supported the Attorney-General in her role as Victoria’s first law officer as part of her criminal and civil law responsibilities.
  • My duties included successfully delivering anti-corruption legislation the first of its kind in Australia targeting the use of human sources by law enforcement.
  • I oversaw the co-ordination, review and development of policy and legislation across the Attorney-General’s portfolio and provided considered, informed and authoritative advice to Ministers and senior officials.
  • I managed the preparation and lodgment of cabinet and parliamentary documentation and the drafting of complex ministerial and government correspondence.
  • I drafted project briefs, reports, service plans, policy options and provided recommendations on complex issues which advocated for a clear and strong support for a preferred position Government should take on key issues.
  • I undertook close stakeholder management including with key stakeholders such as the police union, law council, ombudsman, commission for children and young people and more.
  • I reviewed, analysed, monitored and performed high level research on a range of legal questions and challenges with the legislation. To ensure a comprehensive approach was taken I also undertook comparative analysis of similar legislative schemes enacted in comparable jurisdictions.

Volunteer Experience

United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) 2021-22

  • I was selected as a volunteer for UNOCHA working on the development of a situational awareness framework for Afghanistan. I undertook searches of online sources of information for qualitative data sources such as news articles, reports, surveys, and baseline information on factors that may affect the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan. I was selected as one of the volunteers to attend the presentation of the pilot to the team in Geneva. The pilot was to be used as a way to manage humanitarian situations going forward and will be a great contribution to the delivery of humanitarian assistance worldwide.

Amnesty international 2015-16

  • I worked alongside a Human Rights Lawyer in the Crisis Campaign Response sector. I demonstrated a high-level of research skills for reports on crises, produced within tight deadlines and managed different research tasks simultaneously. I drafted reports for the global Amnesty team, specifically one on the rise of forced disappearances during the Syrian War and provided assistance for Syrian refugees.
