Nursing and Health Sector Experience

22/5/2023-14/7/2023, Repat Health Centre, 5A Timor, 5A Timor is a GEM ward (Geniatric Evaluation and Management). To be more exact, health care staffs need to provide a 7 day rehabilitation service and care planning for elderly patient with decreased cognitive state and mobilities. Therefore, nurses in that ward required to be experienced with cognitive and psycho-social assessment, nutrition and mobility management and medication interaction.

07/11/2022-04/12/2022, Flinders Medical Centre, 6G General ward, 6G general ward is located near a dialysis ward, a majority of patients in the ward have different renal diseases, some patients requires regular dialysis. Thus nurses in that ward required to be familiar with diagnostic tests, nursing care and pathophysiology relevant to renal health complications. In addition, the ward is located near the emergency department, thus it's a challenge for the health care worker to manage care for those patients who just being stabilized from a critical situation.

15/3/2021 to 12/4/2021, Clare Hospital, Kara House Aged Care Service, Kara House is located next to Clare Hospital, it admitted most elderly patients who have their medical condition stabilized. Those patients are usually just being stabilised and need high-level nursing care. In addition, some patients live there for an extended period due to chronic illness, declined cognitive dementia and agitation and support of daily living activities, as they are dependent with their normal activities.

20/01/2020 to 31/01/2020, ACH Group, Perry Park Noarlunga: Residential Care Home, This ward contains patients who are dependent on activities of daily living and requires nursing care and monitoring of their chronic diseases and support with their mobility. Nursing Skills

Planning and organisation: To begin with, I tried to develop short-term planning strategies. Firstly, I was establishing clear and deliverable goals during clinical placement. For instance, to manage specific nursing care of different patients. I learned from nurses to write a plan at beginning of the shift to manage patient care. That action prevents me from burnout in the workplace, as it helps me to maintain effective time management during a busy shift. Secondly, I was being resourceful during clinical placement. For example, to stay organised about managing the key area of care of different patients. I study the patient's care plan, including medications, medical devices and health complications from the computer system and be resourceful about the patient's situation. In addition, after the placement, I make a long-term plan for expand my nursing knowledge. For example, I read the notes from tutorials and placement, as I am trying to identify any knowledge deficiency about my professional skills, and then I will read relevant textbooks and journal articles to improve those areas.

Technology: I learned to use computer systems to manage patients’ care. Firstly, the computer system helped me to monitor frequent observations for multiple patients effectively. For example, it could automatically remind health staff if any abnormal measurement was taken. Secondly, it helped me to organised and calculate patient’s fluid data, as it calculates the fluid intake of the patient automatically,

Communication: I demonstrated a satisfactory level of communication skills. For example, I showed an empathic attitude when talking to a patient who just had a fall.  In addition, I seek clarification about that patient's preference from senior nurses, thus it helps me to deliver proper care to that patient. Furthermore, I can effectively read and understand patients' documents and the related journal about their medical conditions and nursing care, this helped me to expand my clinical knowledge, thus it helped me to be more independent in the clinical setting.

Teamwork: I was able to identify my role in the health team and my strength. For example, at a busy morning shift five patients required morning vital signs measurement, and the doctor will come after 15 minutes to check those measurements. I gave up that opportunity of practice oral medication administration, instead I help the nurses to finished the vital signs observations on time.

Firstly, I correctly identify my role as a nursing student, so I remember to work within my scope of practice and participated in the healthcare team. Secondly, I identified my strength and weakness. To be specific I can perform five vital signs in under 15 minutes, thus I assist my supervisor nurse with this workload.

cover letter

I am writing to express my interest in applying a job as an assistance in nursing or personal care worker under YNA (Your nursing agency). YNA agency can provide opportunities for student nurses to transition into professional nurses. I am aware that graduate nurses face the challenge of transition into professional career. However, I have demonstrated professional skill includes learning skills, communication techniques and organise skills that will help me with upcoming challenges. My best quality is my commitment to lifelong learning. As an international student, I realised that to communicate effectively in clinical settings, I need to gain a better understanding of medical language. Therefore, I developed an enthusiasm for expanding my professional language skills. In addition, I am aware that different clinical venues have their unique venue policies, scope of practice and the technique of nursing procedure. Hence, I am willing to be open to new techniques and ideas, and willing to invest time and efforts to adapt for the environment of clinical settings. I also have a competent level of planning and organising skill. As a nursing student in a clinical setting, I realised that I need to collect and arrange patient information effectively to achieve time efficiency in nursing care. Hence, I nurture a habit of making a daily planner of my study and work schedule, this habit gives me the experience to arrange plans for caring for several patients during a nursing shift. In YNA, graduate nurse will improve their professional skills through instruction and support from highly skilled senior nurses and educators. To be specific, the special TPPP educators will offer graduate nurses clinical practice includes include 24/7 shift work, professional development days and clinical rotation. I learned that in the YNA , highly qualified educator support graduate nurses. That perfectly suits my need as my tutor said that I need further improvement in communication, my future goal is to improve my persuasiveness and assertiveness in my communication. In addition, TPPP program’s educator will guide me to improve my problem-solving skill, this could suit my need to be confident in resolving patients' concerns, which is vital for the professional nurse. I am excited to make those improvement to transition into a professional nurse.

hobbies and interests

This hobbit helps me to develop a deep interest in human anatomy, and pathophysiology, thus it enhances my knowledge related to various medical conditions. My second major interest is to study the social dynamic models by reading books and watching videos, this habit enhances my emotional intelligence, and thus it helped me to be smart about communication in workplace In addition, I like to exercise during my free time, because it improves my mental sharpness and thus helps me with lifelong learning.
