  • I completed 80 hours of clinical placement at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, where I gained valuable knowledge about various types of cancer, and the Schedule 8 (S8) medications commonly used in cancer treatment. During this placement, I learned about the chemotherapy administration process, including the essential safety precautions, and the rationale behind them. Additionally, I developed communication skills, particularly in delivering difficult news to patients. For example, I was involved in a conversation where we had to sensitively inform a patient that, due to the location of her cancer, she would not be able to have children.
  • I completed 80 hours of placement at Liverpool Hospital in the Mental Health Ward, where I enhanced my understanding of mental health assessments, such as the Mental State Examination (MSE), and gained knowledge about various mental health diagnoses. I developed skills in communicating with and supporting adult patients experiencing mental health issues, while also observing the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork and therapeutic care in mental health nursing.
  • I completed 80 hours of clinical placement at Canterbury Hospital in the Acute Aged Care Unit, where I had the opportunity to reinforce and apply my knowledge in key areas of nursing practice. This included safe and accurate medication administration, intravenous (IV) therapy procedures, and adherence to proper manual handling techniques to ensure patient and staff safety. Throughout the placement, I worked with older adults presenting with complex medical conditions, which enhanced my understanding of age-related health concerns, and the importance of holistic, person-centered care. I also gained experience in monitoring for medication side effects, maintaining infection control standards, and supporting patients with mobility challenges. This placement significantly strengthened my clinical skills and deepened my appreciation for compassionate, dignified care in aged-care settings.
  • I completed 160 hours of clinical placement in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where I developed the skills and knowledge required to care for premature neonates. I gained insight into the various medical conditions that contribute to premature birth, as well as the associated risks, such as respiratory distress, sepsis, and feeding difficulties. During this placement, I learned how to calculate neonatal feeds and caloric requirements, and I practiced inserting nasogastric (NG) and learnt about orogastric tubes to support nutritional needs.I also expanded my pharmacological knowledge, including the use of medications such as caffeine. In addition, I observed and learned about neonatal intubation and how airway management in neonates differs from adults due to anatomical and physiological differences.I developed communication skills essential for engaging with and reassuring parents during stressful times, and I collaborated closely with the multidisciplinary team, gaining an appreciation for the coordinated, family-centered approach required in neonatal care..
