Work History

Owner and Operator

Newcastle Guitar Repairs
01.2020 - Current
  • Since leaving medicine I turned a passion for stringed instrument construction and repair into a business
  • As a student at the Wallsend branch of the Australian Guitar Making School under the tutelage of Matt Semmens, I have made 16 guitars over 12 years and repaired hundreds more in my own workshop
  • Developed and maintained strong relationships with clients, resulting in repeat business and referrals.
  • Organized and attended trade shows and special events to showcase products, network with other businesses and attract new customers.

General Practitioner & Assistant Surgeon

Self-employed
01.2012 - 01.2019
  • GP training was a broad community based series of terms in family medicine across several local Newcastle practices, designed to hone clinical and interpersonal skills in the context of working as a general practitioner
  • Throughout my training as a GP I also worked as an assistant surgeon to many surgeons across several fields, and also conducted my own skin cancer surgery clinics
  • I am particularly experienced in the management of hand and wrist injuries and their mechanisms of injury due to my six years as an assistant to Dr Bryce Meads
  • In my last 3 years of practice I worked almost exclusively with emergency responders within the Workcover system - mostly police officers
  • This role was both rewarding and very stressful at times
  • It required a great deal of clinical judgement and adherence to the guiding legislation
  • My emphasis during training on rotations in psychiatry throughout my undergraduate, residency and post graduate roles was of great benefit in this area
  • I was SIRA accredited and at one point had over 25 police and ambulance officers on my books
  • I enjoyed the patient care in the context of general practice, however, I retired from clinical practice in 2019 due to ill health

Psychiatry Career Medical Officer (CMO)

Ramsay Health Care
01.2010 - 01.2012
  • In the role of psychiatry CMO I was responsible for the daily organisation of a busy 25 (and subsequently 51) bed inpatient mental health unit
  • This required effective communication skills with both patients and staff, diligence and flexibility
  • Mental health patients can present as high risk, complex patients and believe I had a very responsive attitude to patients and nursing staff alike
  • I consider I worked with an open and respectful team approach
  • The caseload in private mental health units is predominantly personality disorder, however, there was an emphasis on psychogeriatrics - dementia and neurodegenerative disorders, as well as genuine mood disorders and organic causes of psychiatric disorders

Research Assistant in Neuroscience

Centre for Brain & Mental Health Research
01.2003 - 01.2007
  • During my third year of undergraduate medical training I joined a research team examining the relationship between schizophrenia and cannabis use
  • This role required me to acquire skills in the LONI method of neuroimaging the brain - more specifically the cerebellum
  • I further developed skill in the authorship of research proposals, articles and the management of complex data sets
