The Leeds Teaching Hospitals maternity service is one of the largest in the UK, and provides regional specialist services to ensure even the most complex of deliveries and births can take place. This provided me with excellent experience during my training and time as a qualified midwife here.
My delivery suite experience included caring for low-risk and high-risk labouring women. I would assess, plan and implement all aspects of midwifery care and maintain a high standard of clinical skills, including venepuncture, cannulation, CTG interpretation, medicine management, abdominal palpation, neonatal resuscitation and assessing stage of dilatation. I would escalate any abnormal findings to the shift coordinator and medical team appropriately. The role also included assisting in theatre during instrumental and surgical deliveries.
During my time on the antenatal ward, I would start the process of induction of labour and care for women with a variety of high-risk conditions such as pre-eclampsia and diabetes.
During my time on the postnatal ward, I would provide post-operative care to women following caesarean section, carry out routine postnatal checks on women and babies, carry out neonatal observations and administer neonatal antibiotics and care for women with complications in the postnatal period, for example sepsis.
I would act as an advocate for women and their families and maintain excellent communication skills.
Up-hold excellent written documentation for medical records as per hospital and national board guidelines.
Co-operate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Participate in obstetric emergency drills and procedures.
