Assistant In Nursing

Northern Adelaide Local Health Network- Lyell McEwin & Modbury

  • As an Assistant in Nursing, I provided care to the patient with empathy and compassion to build therapeutic relationships with patients and families by communicating with positive body language, listening to their concerns, and advocating on their behalf.
  • I always worked under direct instructions of the senior nurses most frequently: assisting with re-stocking the medical supply to the wards and patient's rooms, ADLs, feedings, helping nurses with vital observations, recording the parameters, writing general nursing note in Sunrise EMR and co-sign with Registered Nurse on duty.
  • Sometimes I did 1:1 special care from where I am building the confidence in communication and finding the care needs/ concerns of the patient, escalating the care when patient refuses, and reporting any concerns to the RN on duty.

  • I always maintained the AIN’s scope of practice while contributing to overall quality and fundamental of care of patients by answering calls bells, monitoring behaviour and physical condition for progress or deterioration under the scope of practice and NALHN policies.
  • Assisted patients with daily living activities for enhanced comfort and wellbeing.

Personal Care Assistant

Student Registered Nurse

Lyell McEwin Hospital
05.2023 - 07.2023
  • During the first week of the nursing placement in ICU, I had chance to learn both clinical and professional skills on how the nurses provide care for critically ill (intubated and ventilated) patients with complex care needs.
  • Also, I did some studies from given handbooks about how to take care of a patient with arterial line, CVC/PICC/IVC lines, pleural drainage, and how to perform an ECG and about the NALHN’s policy on those cares.
  • After the readings and observation, now I can perform the care such as: zeroing the lines, taking blood gases, taking blood samples, and documentation on ICU flowsheet.
  • After 2-3 weeks of placement, I was confident to perform the shift checks, giving and taking ISBAR handovers, planning the care, and medication preparation and administration under direct supervision.
  • ICU placement was the best opportunity for me to acquire a variety of technical skills (e.g., continuous renal replacement therapy, invasive or non-invasive mechanical ventilation, endotracheal tube suction, and various life-support and rehabilitation technologies) and I am learning through an interdisciplinary approach to develop communication skills with critically ill patients.
  • In addition, I attended the ICU education sessions which include education on different important topics regarding providing care to critically ill patients.
  • These education sessions help me to integrate theoretical knowledge into clinical practice and cultivate my clinical competencies.
  • I have done documentation in Sunrise in ICU Flowsheets, and Intake-Output documentation, checking the orders, medications, preparing IV medications, administering through CVC/PICC or any peripheral accesses by following the booklet of ICU/Australian Injectable Handbook to prevent any medication errors under direct supervision of the Registered Nurse.
  • I am administering Subcutaneous injections and giving inhalers to the ICU patients under Registered Nurse supervision.
  • Every day in ICU is learning new skills such as patients with different medical conditions.
  • For example: I had a chance to provide care to a patient with Guillain Barre Syndrome, that was the first time to hear about that syndrome.
  • So, I researched about that condition, read progress notes, and found the rationale on the care needs of the patient with the condition.
  • The main goal of this placement was on improving time management and communication with intubated/ventilated patients.
  • I am confident that I am achieving this from this placement.
  • For example: I am learning non-verbal communication strategies and prioritizing the tasks to manage time.
  • Whenever I care for the patient, I always try to find the rationale on why such as: if the patient is not eating/drinking orally or been intubated, we give IV therapy/NG feeds/TPN to maintain the electrolytes to prevent dehydration or malnutrition.
  • I am doing nasogastric aspirate and starting nasogastric feed through the feeding pump under Registered Nurse supervision.
  • I am confident to use syringe pumps for the administration of drugs and other fluids and electrolytes.
  • Specially from the ICU placement, I found the teamwork is critical for instance: there were the access nurses, resource nurses, and met nurses to assist the floor nurses in need.
  • I learned how to do a blood/Iron transfusion to the patient.
  • I assisted my Registered Nurse to do the documentation during the transfusion and after finishing of blood transfusion as per the ICU policies and procedures.
  • I have observed code blue/MET calls, assisted the Registered Nurse in wound dressing by following the Aseptic Non-touch technique (ANTT).
  • During my placement, I strictly follow the hand hygiene and infection control protocol of the organisation and always maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • At last, I got really good feedback from the preceptor Nurses on my practice as a Student Nurse.

Student Registered Nurse

Lyell McEwin Hospital
10.2022 - 11.2022
  • As a first year Nursing student, I learned a wide range of clinical skills as it was my very first acute and pediatric care experience.
  • For the first week of placement, I observed how the nurses make the care plan/ deliver care, their communication strategies, getting familiar with the ward and equipment.
  • After that, I started making my own plan of care with shift planner and help of my preceptor, communicating with the pediatric patients and their parents for example: talking in a friendly way, smiling, involving the parents/families in the care that helped me to make therapeutic relationship with them.
  • I assisted the pediatric patients with feedings such as: bottle feedings, peg feedings or through nasogastric tube as per nutritional needs, recorded the intakes and output in the fluid intake charts.
  • Most importantly, I performed vital observations, recorded them in RDAR charts according to the age of the patients, did neurological/neurovascular observations and documented, and informed any abnormalities of the observations to the supervising nurse.
  • With the help of supervising nurse, I practiced with my own patient load during the last weeks of placement, and I was able to plan the care after the handover, provide the care needs and asked for help when needed from my supervising nurse, or reporting any changes/abnormalities in health status of the patient.
  • I did some admissions and discharges paperwork and nursing notes, dipstick urinalysis, collected urine/blood/stool sample, send to pathology under supervision.
  • I built confidence in the clinical skills, ISBAR handover and as well as cooperation with the other health professionals.
  • I also assisted the patient to go and come back from the theatre with the nurse and perform the assessments as per the ward’s policy.
  • I documented the care provided, tried to provide best and safe care to the patient, report any changes: deteriorating patient/ changes in care needs/abnormalities in health status.
  • From this placement, I have built my critical thinking & clinical reasoning skills for example: I reported any abnormalities/deterioration of pa patient, researched online & asked the nurses if I was unsure about anything, practiced transferring my theoretical knowledge into real case, monitoring closely if patient has fluctuating vitals.
  • I always maintained positive and professional relationships with the patients, their parents and with the supervising nurses. And I got good feedback from my supervising nurses.
  • I always maintained the capabilities for practice, practiced only under the supervision of the registered nurses, followed the policy and procedures of the hospital, followed infection control practice to provide the best compassionate care.
