The department cares for patients who underwent elective and emergency surgeries, emergency assessment and treatment of
Gynaecology condition such as PV Bleeding, Abdominal pain due to gynae cause, Gynae oncology, and early pregnancy
complications such as abdominal pain and PV Bleeding, ealy pregnancy loss.
My role as a staff nurse includes
- the direct care of all these patients including preliminary patient examination to ascertain patient`s conditions to
determine if they need surgical interventions.
- Ensure all pre-operative checks and investigations have been carried out and prepare patients for surgery.
Typical presentations are for Hysterectomy, urogynaecology repairs, emergency early pregnancy interventions such as ectopic
and surgical management of miscarriages, alongside diagnostic and symptomatic management of gynae oncology patients.
- Post-operative care of patients, receiving handover, completing initial clinical observations and monitoring of patients following surgery.
- Giving post-operative advice and medication information on discharge.
- Receiving referrals from GP, Community midwives, Oncology CNS and from EPAS.
- Chasing blood results and arranging scans, analysing and escalating to the appropriate member of the team.
- Proving emotional support and showing empathy to women who had early pregnancy loss and referring them to early pregnancy loss support midwives.
- Taking in charge of the department and coordinating the ward and maintain team work.
- Send appropriate referrals and communicate co-ordinate with other multi-disciplinary team
- Maintain confidentiality of patients information and proper documentation.
- Educated patients on postoperative care, promoting faster healing times and better long-term outcomes.
- Prepare patients for surgical interventions.
- Receive patients from recovery & continue monitoring to ensure recovery from anaesthesia and prevent complications.
- Reduced postoperative complications through careful monitoring and timely interventions.
- Promoted a culture of safety within the surgical unit by identifying potential hazards and implementing corrective actions as needed.
