Rotation 1 – Bass Ward (Frankston Hospital) – Surgical Rotation
- Developed understanding and knowledge caring for patients with a variety of acute or chronic health conditions that mostly involved a surgical component
- Fast paced ward that required the development of time management, critical thinking and problem solving
- Vital signs were performed at regular intervals to assess health status
- Knowledge gained in the understanding and management of a patient having a stoma
- Increased knowledge and involvement in pre- and post-operative care
- Skillfully performed a variety of dressing changes including assessment of wounds, suture and staple removal
- Developed knowledge in the treatment involved for a small bowel obstruction, using nasogastric tube, and alterations to diet
- First experience in being part of multi-disciplinary team that revolves around patient centred care and providing physical and emotional support for the patients
Rotation 2 – Children & Adolescent Ward (Frankston Hospital) – Paediatrics
- Improved knowledge, confidence and skills caring for patients and families with individual needs and family backgrounds
- Liaise between patients, family members and treating teams to ensure patient satisfaction and comprehension of treatment and conditions
- Provide emotional support to families when their child is at their most vulnerable time feeling poorly and throughout the admission on the ward
- Involved in the care and treatment for paediatric patients of all ages including bronchiolitis, asthma, seizure management and surgical procedures
Rotation 3 – Walker Ward (Rosebud Hospital) – Medical Rotation
- Assisting elderly patients with washing, dressing, toileting, transferring, ambulating and feeding
- Further developed skills in wound assessment and dressing changes
- Increased knowledge in acute and long-term rehabilitation for patients with complex medical history
- Developed an understanding of the importance of recognizing a deteriorating patient early to aid in optimising positive health outcomes
