Some Key Points

  • 2005- Present: Training Officer/Senior Team Member, ACT and NSW State Emergency Service
  • As a training officer with ACTSES, I showed initiative and invested extra effort in training and preparing team members for their General Rescue Assessment by;
  • Developing a formal training program
  • Putting in extra effort out of hours
  • Utilising highly developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Being able to engender enthusiasm and motivation amongst trainees.
  • This resulted in very strong results in circumstances where, due to the extra training, the trainees easily passed the full assessment and were commended on the skills and underpinning knowledge shown compared with other teams assessed at the same time.
  • I have consistently showed natural problem-solving skills as illustrated by having to deal with the collapse of a tree onto a house during the June 2007 storms and floods in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, where there was some uncertainty within the team as how to deal with the situation; I took on a team leadership role in addressing the problem; I was able to develop and implement a fast, effective and most importantly, safe solution that had not occurred to other team members.
  • Throughout my career, both paid and volunteer, there has been an ongoing focus on training and safety, both designed to enhance my skills and knowledge as well as those around me. The many and varied roles have enabled me to become very diverse in what I am capable of achieving, which keeps me wanting more.
