Summary
My name is Damon Schirmer and i’m 21 years old from Cranebrook, Sydney, NSW. I started civil construction in 2020 while in trade school with John Holland and worked with them through year 11 and 12 of school. I then finished year 12 in November 2021 and started full time with John Holland on Iron Cove Link. Over the time that I had worked there I gained confidence, knowledge, real world skills and experience that I hope to grow and in my future years. I then used my knowledge to move over to a Sydney Metro site in paramatta with Gamuda in March of 2023. This move was where I transitioned from completely labour to a mix of operation and labour which boosted my skills 10x more. I had the opportunities to operate the telehandler daily, Dog cranes daily and work with other different machines that I never had before. Unfortunately I only worked there until November 2025 when the civil side of our site was all made redundant.
