Summary

Before starting my studies in psychology, I worked in an orphanage, where I was exposed to mental health challenges such as post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from trauma. This experience highlighted the importance of building strong, trusting relationships with children, which are essential for acceptance, respect, and subsequent therapeutic progress. During this time, I also encountered cases of early substance abuse within families experiencing high levels of conflict.

This exposure motivated me to pursue a position in a forensic psychiatric clinic during my bachelor’s studies, where I worked with individuals whose criminal behaviours were linked to substance use disorders or crimes committed under the influence. In this role, I held significant personal responsibilities, which accelerated my learning and helped me build confidence in the field of psychology and in working directly with patients. It served as an excellent entry point into the professional environment of psychologists and psychotherapists. Overall, those experiences motivated me to choose my topic of the bachelor's thesis.

Subsequently, I gained further experience in behavioural psychotherapy while working in a general psychiatric day clinic during my masters. Leading two groups independently - progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and a psychoeducation group on sleep ("sleeping group") - enhanced my planning and organizational skills, establish a structured approach to group therapy, and refine my professional communication with patients. Combined with the possibilities of 1 on 1 contacts in both work placements these experiences have taught me a well-rounded perspective on psychological care, therapeutic practices, and patient-centred approaches. My work placement at the University Outpatient Clinic of Humboldt University in Berlin, within the Special Outpatient Clinic for Social Interaction, provided me with valuable experiences and skills in psychotherapeutic practice and diagnostics. This placement deepened my understanding of the complexities of social interaction and communication challenges faced by adults, particularly those on the autism spectrum. Especially gaining insights in a full diagnostic process due to interviews and questionnaires showed me the beginning of a therapeutic process in a clinical setting. Driven by my strong interest in PTSD and substance use disorders, I chose to focus my master's thesis on these topics.
