Telecommunications Engineer

  • Within my role as a Telecommunications Engineer, our duties were to install the full fibre. Often working in roads, footpaths and fields, we would install new cables often overhead or underground. Sometimes we would go to customers' houses and install the last process.
  • Within my first year at Openreach I completed initial training and an NVQ qualification, followed by the year after progressing from Trainee to Advanced Engineer through additional training and mentoring.
  • After my first year my manager assigned me as 'Gang Lead', meaning that I led small teams and supported the training of new recruits. This role taught me how to be patient and understanding.
  • More recently I acted as Care Representative, meaning I was liaising between engineers and management. This would involve having meetings with the team and noting down any concerns/ issues/ questions and ideas to take these back to management meetings ensuring the team kept good moral and smooth transitions throughout any team changes. I did this alongside my normal engineer duties.
  • I participated in high-demand regional support projects in Aberystwyth and London, where I would go and stay there for a period of time to help other teams with higher workload. In London I stayed down there for a month working extra hours.

  • In Ifor Williams I operated pillar drills and press machines in a high-volume factory setting. Once I was efficient in the pillar drill and all my work was completed, I then got trained up on press machines to cover extra time and help out. This supported efficiency by rotating between departments and assisting others.
  • On the pillar drill I had to ensure precision from my end so that all the pieces were correct for the welding team.
