Work History
Mental Health Peer Worker
Midland Community Mental Health Service
281 Great Eastern Hwy, Midland.
03.2015 - 07.2022
The pioneering position of Peer Support Worker at MC MHS is one of eight PSW’s employed by North Metropolitan Adult Mental Health Service
I supported people suffering from chronic and persistent mental illness to engage with hope and recovery in order to live a satisfying and fulfilling life.
I utilised crisis management listening skills, empathy and understanding in all of my interactions.
I interpret the language and experience of recovery from mental illness for clinicians and for patients in order to transform patient self-perception, and clinical attitudes to psychiatric illness.
It is a culture changing role which reduces stigma associated with mental illness and delivers tangible results for patients and clinicians.
I emphasise that it is normal for people to recover from mental illness.
My role is to embed Peer Support within the government mental health service.
This includes working within a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, psychiatric nurses and welfare officers to advocate and facilitate the best outcomes for mental health service users.
I support patients to achieve goals and objectives in their recovery by collaborating with the patient, their Case Manager, and their psychiatrist to create and implement Recovery Model Care Plans.
I participate in clinical reviews at Team Meetings.
Since July 1st, I have become the only Peer Support Worker in the Royal Perth Bentley Group.
I continue to actively promote the Recovery Model and lived experience of mental illness in the form of Peer Support, as crucial for positive Mental health outcomes in psychiatry in line with the Mental Health Act 2014.
