  • In this decision-making role, I consider applications made by survivors of institutional childhood sexual abuse; and determine whether a person is eligible for redress by interpreting and applying the relevant Act and Rules, policy guidelines and relevant legislation to each case, in a procedurally fair manner.
  • This role requires a strong understanding of the cultural, social, historical and political factors relevant to the Scheme and the ability to apply, interpret and follow legislation, to determine quantum/s.
  • I prepare a detailed Statement of Reasons for each matter - for applicants and liable institutions. I also conduct review determinations.
  • The Scheme operates under a trauma-informed framework.
  • I handle a high volume of cases and enjoy the rigours of this independent role, based on administrative law principles.
  • IDMs are nominated by State, Territory and Commonwealth Governments and approved by the Minister’s Governance Board.

  • Following an investigation, matters may be referred to the Civil & Administrative Tribunal or Court, seeking disciplinary findings or other orders.
  • I regularly briefed Counsel during investigations.
  • In 2023-2024, I applied for the role of Solicitor, Professional Support, guiding solicitors on their ethical, compliance & costs obligations under the Uniform Law.
  • In this role, I assisted NSW legal practitioners with legal practice management.
  • During my tenure at the Society, I was responsible for providing legal services (legal advice, transaction legal work and preparing for litigation) to the Director & Deputy Director of Professional Standards and the Head of Regulatory Policy and Strategy; developed precedents and other resources for investigators and the profession.
  • I was actively involved in committee work, including the Professional Standards, Ethics and Costs Committees.

  • The Professional Conduct Lawyer also undertakes investigations into barristers, the subject of disciplinary conduct complaints.
  • My responsibilities included case management; rigorous analysis of evidence and responses to that evidence.
  • The role worked closely with the Chair and Barrister members on the Professional Conduct Committee throughout the investigative process; provision of constructive advice to facilitate Committee deliberations; the application and interpretation of the Uniform Law and the progression of each matter expeditiously, having regard to both factual and legal content, while adhering to procedural fairness considerations.
  • The investigative process concluded by preparing a report for Bar Council's consideration.
  • This position involved retaining and briefing external solicitors and counsel; acting as conduit for instructions to and from the Bar Council or the Executive Committee; and attending hearings (as necessary).
  • I was also responsible for providing ethical advice to barristers and handling disclosure matters.
  • The role provided secretariat assistance to four Professional Conduct Committees which facilitated the investigation of, and reporting to, Council on conduct complaints, show cause events and disclosure matters made pursuant to the Uniform Law.
  • I was appointed Secretary to the Bar Association’s Professional Conduct Committee (No. 1) and attended regular Bar Council Meetings.
  • The position involved working with other lawyers within the Bar Association and external stakeholders on policy matters and law reform issues; liaising with co-regulators in NSW and interstate.

  • I worked as an Assessor of Client Claims under the delegated authority of the Commissioner for Victims Rights.
  • This role involved assessing applications for victims’ support.
  • I was required to consider available evidence, to determine whether a victim was eligible for victims’ compensation under the Victims’ Rights and Support Act 2013.
  • As part of the Family Victims Team, a specialist unit, I had carriage of decisions for family victims of homicide.
  • This included assessing support for crime-scene clean-ups, funeral expenses, financial support towards immediate needs and economic loss (including expenses incurred to attend coronial inquiries or judicial proceedings resulting from an act of violence).
  • This role required an understanding of administrative law principles including fairness, accountability, consistency, rationality, proportionality, legality and impartiality.
  • It also required an understanding of therapeutic jurisprudence and vicarious trauma.
  • In this role, I worked with Indigenous communities in NSW through the Strong Aboriginal Women Conferences.
