Work History

Director

Brighter Super
07.2018 - Current

I joined the LGIA Super (now Brighter Super) Board in July 2018 as a representative director of the LGAQ

Since that time we have grown dramatically and performed exceptionally.

We merged with Energy Super in 2020 and then acquired Suncorp Super (SPSL) in 2022 to build a $30B+ fund that ranks highly in member service, retirement planning and financial outcomes.

I have always worked closely with my board colleagues and our Executive Leadership Team to deliver the best outcome for our members

President

Local Government Association Of Qld
10.2016 - 07.2024

For the past 8 years I have held the position of President of the LGAQ (Local Government Association of Queensland) which has seen me represent, advocate for, and visit often on multiple occasions our 77 far flung Council members including the 17 discrete indigenous councils principally on Cape York

After the retirement of or longstanding CEO, I lead the recruitment of our new Chief Executive.

I have worked diligently in improving the performance of the LGAQ and its critical role of advocacy to other levels of government and stakeholders

I have developed strong connections to all Federal and State Minister's and member's

Mayor Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast Regional Council
04.2012 - 04.2024

Led the economic recovery of the Sunshine Coast, post the Global Financial Crisis, through a contemporary Regional Economic Development Strategy.

A new international airport, Australia's first grid connected solar farm

Construction of a $100m City Hall

Connected Sunshine Coast, Queensland and Australia to the world with the installation of a international Broadband submarine cable from Maroochydore to Hong Kong, Tokyo and Los Angeles

Attracted Australia's most successful national sporting team, the Sunshine Coast Lightning netball club who won an otherwise Capital City competition in their inaugural year 2016

Generated a level of community confidence, unlike any period in the regions history.

Assisted elected Councillors to understand and commit to working as a team in delivering for our community. In a rapidly growing region leadership, foresight and dedication is vital

Identified and actioned critical environment sustainability projects such as the UNESCO Biosphere

Commenced the strategy, planning and implementation of a new City Centre in Maroochydore

I gave Council employees a reason to be proud of their region and to action all of our strategic and community initiatives

With budget responsibility in Council, the Sunshine Coast delivered its first one-billion-dollar budget last year, highlighting the investment required in managing growth communities

Over my 12 years as Mayor, I oversaw the Local Disaster Management Group, which included everything nature could throw at us and the Covid 19 pandemic. Certainty, resilience and guidance is what communities expect from their leaders

Non Executive Director

Council Of Mayors SEQ
05.2012 - 03.2024

A collaboration of the 11 Mayors of South East Queensland advocating for our collective population that represents 1 in 6.5 Australians

The original bid for the Olympic/Paralympic Games was initiated by this group.

I am proud to say I had a considerable role in Queensland winning the bid

Chief Executive

APN News & Media
01.1981 - 11.2009

I commenced as an Advertising Sales representative in Hervey Bay, worked my way up, moving regularly to expand my career over almost 30 years and finish in the role of Chief Executive

Profits increased dramatically in all my roles but particularly, in my five-year tenure as COO and CEO at APN Australian Publishing, where innovation and new product development combined with sensible cost restraint produced exponential increases.

Through a period when worldwide newspaper circulations suffered significant decline, the 14 paid daily titles under my leadership maintained overall circulation because of focusing staff on relevant and timely local issues together with inventive marketing.
