Skills

  • Interpersonal skills - To relate well to patients, listen to their concerns and show compassion and empathy. For example, received appreciation for support when compassion was shown for a patient who was very sensitive to pain and nervous about having his central venous line replaced. This was achieved through verbal distraction, accompanying him throughout the procedure and explaining what was happening.
  • Teamwork skills - To work in partnership with patients and the multidisciplinary team. For example, when a patient with a traumatic brain injury became increasingly alert during a bed wash, it was a collaborative decision to sit him in his wheelchair with the help of the physiotherapist, AIN, and my clinical facilitator. We were able to use the stand-up lifter and sit him in his wheelchair for the first time. It was a significant moment for his mother.
  • Observational and Communication Skills- During one of my placements. I noticed an elderly stroke patient becoming more lethargic and exhibiting new speech slurring. Performing a detailed neurological assessment, I found a slight decrease in his GCS score and new right-side weakness. Recognizing the seriousness, I promptly communicated these findings to the supervising nurse and on-call physician. My clear and concise report led to immediate medical attention, revealing a new bleed and resulting in the patient's transfer to the ICU for further treatment.
