Abstract: The animals investigated were cattle and goats. Trypanososmes from the blood of animals were detected by wet blood film, stained thin film examination, thick film examination and Buffy coat techniques, while the Hematocrit technique was used to determine the Packed Cell Volume (PCV).
A total of 321 animals (207 cattle and 114 goats) were examined. The result showed that 40 animals (12.6%) were infected with trypanosomes. Trypanosoma vivax was found both in cattle and in goats with a prevalence rate of 16.90% and 4.3% respectively. Among the infected animals, 13.04%, 2.4% and 1.45% were due to T. vivax, T. condolense and T. brucei respectively in cattle, while in goats, only T. vivax was encountered with an infection rate of 4.38%. T. vivax was the leading specie encountered in both animals.
