My name is Je-Yan Hsu, I'm 26 years old. I was born in Taiwan but I moved to Shanghai when I was 5 years old with my family, Mandarin Chinese is my mother tongue, and I'm also comfortable with Taiwanese, I attended an international school in Shanghai from kindergarten to the third year of junior high, therefore I am also very fluent in English.
After high school, I returned to Taiwan and enrolled at I-Shou International School in Kaohsiung. I later graduated from Macquarie University in Australia with a major in Economics. My foundation in macroeconomics, finance, statistics, and accounting is solid, and I've also delved into basics of programming languages like Python and R during my university studies.
My father is a Taiwanese businessman who runs a textile trading company in mainland China. Starting from high school, I interned at the Shanghai office every summer. My tasks included entering data, reviewing financial reports, and as I have passion for creative editing I also create videos or presentations for the company. I often traveled with colleagues and managers to various locations in China or overseas, one of my most important achievements was I presented and promoted a new fabric from our company to the world renowned brand New Era which ultimately secured a contract for our company.
I'm optimistic, proactive, enjoy making friends, and have a keen interest in understanding different cultural backgrounds. At Macquarie University, I served as the secretary for the Taiwanese Student Association, documenting meeting content and managing the club's finances. Growing up in Shanghai has made me familiar with Chinese culture, lifestyle, consumption patterns, and economic development.
Apart from my decade in Shanghai, I've visited many major coastal cities in China. From my primary and secondary school years in Shanghai to my university years in Sydney, I've made friends with people who are now working or starting businesses in mainland China and around Asia, building a network of friends from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau as well as Southeast Asia.
My passion for language learning extends beyond Mandarin, English, and Taiwanese. I'm extremely fluent in Cantonese from interactions with friends in Hong Kong, Macau, and Southeast Asia since childhood. I've also studied basic Japanese and Korean. I worked part-time in an Australian supermarket for two years, organizing shelves and assisting customers with Chinese-English translation.
In 2020, due to the pandemic, I temporarily returned to Taiwan, completed military service, and utilized my computer skills and artistic design abilities on the Fiverr platform. I also worked on Shopify for website designs and offered Mandarin and Cantonese tutoring services, earning for my final year's tuition in Australia. After the pandemic, I returned to Australia in 2023 and graduated in 2024. I am a hardworking student offering part-time work experience and extensive knowledge of core subject matter.
