  • Professional Placement 1: St Francis of Assisi Home- 3 weeks.- communication and developing professional relationships with residents and members of the team. Bathing, showering and dressing residents and making beds, to hospital standard. Feeding residents and offering assistance. Vital signs, wound assessments and additional assessments are needed. Medication safety. Simple documentation. Assessing and what to do regarding a deterioration resident. Keeping safe from residents with complex dementia.
  • Professional Placement 2: Rehab/Orthopedic Ward, Mackay Base Hospital - 3 weeks.- Introduction to hospital environment. Took a 4 patient load- vitals signs, neurovascular assessments and critical thinking skills. Introduction to care after surgery and patient's that are immobile. Giving medications through IV, subcut and intramuscular. Medication administration and calculations.
  • Professional Placement 3: Sacred Heart (medical ward), Mater Private Hospital, Mackay- 2 weeks - competence in IV antibiotics and priming. medication administration such as medication safety and what the particular drug is for. Improving critical thinking skills. Introduction to medical ward and different conditions. Improving documentation.
  • Professional Placement 4: Cardiac Cath Lab, Mackay Base Hospital- 4 weeks. introduction to complex specialty and a theatre concept/area. Learnt infection control importance and hand washing when being a scrub nurse. Pre-operative checklist. Set up and clean down of procedures. Introduction to recovery and protocols to follow. ECG and cardiac assessments. cardiac medications.
  • Mental Health Placement: Child and Youth Mental Health Service, Mackay Hospital and Health Service- 1 week and Mental Health Facility, Mackay Base Hospital- 1 week.- introduction to community services, mental health examination, different mental health conditions and the interventions that are included. medication administration, patient and individual safety.
