Accomplishments

  • Developed and Strengthened Security Network: Successfully improved Murdoch University's security network by introducing a custom honeypot behind the firewall, designed to catch attackers who bypassed the university's defenses.
  • Utilized Open-Source Technology: Built the honeypot using the T-Pot management system, an open-source solution, and customized it to fit the specific needs of the university.
  • Team Collaboration: Led a team of four members to familiarize ourselves with Docker and customize it for our project. This involved creating three decoy environments mimicking the university's HTTP portal, SSH port, and SQL database to lure attackers.
  • Simulated Realistic Attacks: Designed these environments based on what attackers would perceive as the university’s network, allowing us to gather extensive information on potential threats.
  • Collaboration with Management: Worked closely with Alan Fereday, the Manager of Information Security and Risk at Murdoch University, impressing him with our timely deliverables and the quality of our work.
  • My position in the project was as the security analyst.

Projects

  • Honeypot Project: Designed and implemented a custom honeypot system for proactive threat detection and analysis. Utilized SIEM, cloud services, and VM technologies to enhance the university's security infrastructure. Collaborated with the Murdoch University Cyber Security Department as a Security Officer to integrate our system with their existing security measures.
  • Vulnerability Mitigation Project (CVE-2022-40684): Participated in a university-led initiative to identify and mitigate a critical security vulnerability (CVE-2022-40684). Utilized tools such as Nessus, Nmap, and OpenVAS to conduct thorough vulnerability assessments and implement effective mitigation strategies.
