Working in the casual pool at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital as an Assistant in Nursing, I assisted the Registered Nurses with various tasks across multiple wards.
These tasks included, monitoring patient well-being, analysing and interpreting IVT fluid pumps, supporting activities of daily living, providing empathetic support for distressed patients and families, educating and assisting families, accompanying patients at hospital school, engaging in therapeutic activities with patients and writing clear and accurate documentation on Sunrise EMR.
Working within the casual pool has allowed me to develop my future clinical nursing skills and uphold essential ethical nursing principles such as promoting patient dignity, ensuring culturally sensitive care and providing emotional support towards my patients and their families, ensuring high quality of care was delivered.
Assistant in Nursing- Neonatal Services SCBU
Womens and Childrens Hospital
Adelaide, SA
04.2024 - Current
I currently hold a permanent part-time contract in SCBU with a FTE of 0.74 working early, late and night shifts over a seven-day roster.
Working in SCBU has fostered my learning in various clinical skills that I can implement into my practice as a Registered Nurse.
These skills include frequently feeding infants through the breast, bottle or gavage, nasogastric feeding tube insertion and management, nappy changes, bathing, management of breathing support such as Opti flow, blood sugar level monitoring such as heel prick gasses, assisting with admitting and discharging babies, parent education, assisting with mother’s breast feeding and contributing to informed decision making with the multidisciplinary team.
Working early, late and night shifts in SCBU has allowed me to understand how the ward operates such as ward round on the early shift and wash and weighs on the night shift.
Working in SCBU has allowed my clinical skills to broaden extensively which will smooth the transition of becoming a Registered Nurse.
During each shift in SCBU, I uphold fundamental nursing principles and ethics by providing patient and family centered, holistic care that addresses the physical, emotional and developmental needs for the infant.
I apply appropriate interventions and evidence-based practice into my care to ensure my care aligns with the Women’s and Children’s Hospital values and guidelines to provide safe and effective care.
