  • Product Specialist for customers in the Immunogenetics, engraftment and disease association community in Australia and New Zealand
  • Responsibilities include but not limited to:

Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory

NSW HEALTH PATHOLOGY - WESTMEAD HOSPITAL

  • Proficient with the duties and procedures that are performed in the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory maintaining compliance with operational standards, quality standards and continual process improvement including;
  • Responsible for chimerism monitoring and reporting of bone marrow/stem cell/ cord blood/HPC products for HSCT/BM/CB recipients
  • Close liaison with the Blood Transplant and Cellular Therapies Laboratory and the Millennium Institute Westmead to facilitate the delivery of high-quality results to Transplant and Oncology units
  • As well as liaising with the Life Blood Tissue Typing Laboratory for extraordinary requests.
  • Identify GVHD in solid organ and bone marrow recipients
  • Act as third party witness to the infusion of fresh and thawed hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) product on the hematology transplant ward (Westmead and Children's Hospitals) and Cancer Day Suite.
  • Quantitative PCR and fragment analysis of data using various software such as ChimerMarker
  • Routinely perform and analyse data from several NATA accredited assays
  • Extraction of DNA and RNA patient blood, bone marrow and tissue (including FFPE)
  • Training of new staff members
  • Responsible for programming/calibration/troubleshooting instruments and equipment including being the QIAGEN QIAgilities and QIAcubes

Molecular Genetics and Serological Laboratories

NSW TISSUE TYPING LABORATORY - LIFEBLOOD SYDNEY

  • I have been fortunate enough to be one of a select few who rotate throughout all the different sections of the department (and maintain competency) to enable me to perform out-of-hours lifesaving on-call work.
  • I am proficient with the duties and procedures that are performed in all areas of the HLA Tissue Typing Laboratory maintaining compliance with operational standards, quality standards and continual process improvement including but not limited to the following:
  • Tissue Typing Solid Organ Transplant Co-Ordinator
  • Liaise with Renal physicians and coordinators for the daily maintenance of the renal recipient lists.
  • Maintenance of records of kidney transplants in NSW
  • Liaise with Cardiac, Pulmonary, Hepatic and Corneal physicians and coordinators for the daily maintenance of the NSW Heart, Lung, Liver and Corneal recipient lists.
  • Maintenance of records of heart, lung, liver, and corneal transplants in NSW.
  • Production of Solid Organ Crossmatch and Screening trays.
  • Tissue Typing Molecular Genetics Laboratory
  • Receipt of blood specimens into the laboratory.
  • Extraction and storage of DNA from blood samples, tissue, and cell lines.
  • HLA typing of transplant patients and donors by PCR-SSP technique.
  • Use of the Tissue Typing computer system to record sample details, type and tests required.
  • Analysis, interpretation, reporting and authorising of results.
  • HLA typing of cadaver donors using serological and PCR-SSP methods as part of the on-call roster.
  • Use of NOMS (National Organ Matching System) database to match patients and donors for solid organ transplantation.
  • As part of the on-call roster fill liquid nitrogen tanks on public holidays and to respond to emergency calls to check on faulty equipment e.g
  • Freezer breakdowns.
  • Workplace Trainer and Assessor.
  • Preparation of reagents and disposable laboratory items and carry out our general housekeeping duties.
  • Cleaning and basic maintenance of laboratory equipment e.g., Centrifuges and disposal of biohazard waste.
  • Receipt of consumables, disposables and equipment for the laboratory and the use of the laboratory database to record receipt.
  • Compliance with ASHI, ASEATTA/APHIA, TGA and NATA requirements.
  • Tissue Typing Serological Laboratory
  • Receipt of blood specimens into the laboratory.
  • Liaise with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia patients and patients with unusual HLA antibodies for samples precious to the laboratory
  • This included accompanying them through the donation process.
  • Preparation of cells from whole blood, CLL patients, cadaver donor spleen and lymph nodes for testing and cryogenic storage.
  • Processing, cryopreservation and storage of hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) - apheresis and marrow products using aseptic techniques
  • Analysis, authorisation and reporting of Class I serological typing and crossmatches.
  • Perform lymphocytotoxicity testing of HLA Class I serological typing and crossmatching.
  • Preparation of serum samples for crossmatching.
  • Reading of results and analysis in the Lambda Scan Computer System.
  • Perform leucocyte antibody screens, analyse, report, and authorise results.
  • Equipment calibration, cleaning, and routine maintenance.
