Senior Registry Officer (Trial Listings)

  • I have moved into my current position where my focus is managing the trial listings diary and Judge’s rosters
  • I successfully was able to offload the responsibilities I had whilst being the Deputy Registrar in a way where it made little to no effect on the running of the Court

  • I temporarily stepped into the Deputy Registrar role of the Common Law Division
  • The role was primarily responsible for managing the trial listings diary and Judge’s rosters
  • This is managed by communicating with judicial officers, colleagues and external practitioners in accordance with legislative requirements
  • I oversee the transfer of cases to other courts, such as the Magistrates Court of Victoria, County Court of Victoria, Federal Court of Australia or Supreme Courts in other states
  • This requires constant and clear communication
  • I am providing people management to a team of case management support officers and lawyers
  • I continued my project work within this role, including spearheading the automation of emails through the current case management system that is used within the court which will assist in minimising the workload of up to 6 hours per week

  • My responsibilities include sending listing emails, drafting orders monitoring inboxes, listing and vacating hearings and writing case summaries to be put forward to trial judges
  • On an ad hoc basis, I have the training to step into the role of an associate if required
  • I have recently started assisting allocating trial dates to Judges
  • Throughout my time in my current position, I have completed four projects using Microsoft apps which have increased efficiency in the team

  • Whilst I worked within the Guardianship division of the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal where my role responsibility was to prepare matters that were being heard under the Guardianship Act 1987
  • Applications for Guardianship Orders, Financial management Orders, Consent for treatment, Review an Enduring Power of Attorney, Review an Enduring Guardianship Appointment or Approval of a Clinical Trial would be made and it was my responsibility to contact all those who were involved and write a report to be provided to the panel that was hearing the application
  • The most important person to contact and obtain the view of was always the person who the application concerned, however effective communication and a strong understanding of mental health, disabilities and/or difficult backgrounds was required
  • A knowledge of the legislation and procedure around the applications was also necessary as assistance by different stakeholders was always needed

Human Rights Case Officer

  • I was offered the role of a Case Officer for the Human Rights Division at VCAT
  • I used my skills and legal training to understand and practice multiple legislations such as the Mental Health Act 2014, Disability Act 2006, Equal Opportunity Act 2010, Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 and Health Records Act 2001
  • A knowledge of the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities (the Charter) was also required
  • I effectively communicated with stakeholders such as the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, Mental Health Tribunal, Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner, Health Complaints Commissioner, other government departments and many legal representatives
  • I managed applications to VCAT from the beginning until final orders had been made
  • I was the point of contact for all parties, Members or Judges
  • My responsibilities include assessing eligibility of applications, listing hearings, assisting Members or Judges, creating and sending out orders and answering procedural and legislative questions for the community
  • In my time in the role, the statistics were used to move the team from being a pilot team to a permanent team within VCAT

  • I was offered an ongoing position in the Residential Tenancies Division at VCAT where I have gained experience in all areas of the registry
  • I was able to put forward new procedures that have been implemented into the way that registry now deal with submissions of evidence and move forward with procedural guidelines
  • My daily tasks included jurisdictional assessment, payments, listing hearings and analysing and responding to emails from users
  • I assisted bench clerking with my main focus administrative work
  • Whilst in this role, I also became the Disability Liaison Officer and Family Violence Officer for the Division
  • During this time, I learnt many key skills about communicating and working with those who have disabilities, mental illness, drug and alcohol dependencies and sensitive backgrounds
  • I gained extensive experience with many different situations and continue to use these skills
