MIGRANT SWIMMING PROGRAM, 2020 - 2021, During the 2020 and 2021 holidays, I volunteered to teach a group of migrants swimming skills and water safety. Every day for a week, I would take a few people for an hour at a time and teach basic skill and safety development. The program ran for 4 hours every day.
SURF LIFE SAVING SOUTH AUSTRLAIA, 2018 - PRESENT, As a current surf patrol vice-captain, I volunteered from 2018 to present at West Beach Surf Life Saving Club. Surf patrol runs every weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 12-6 during the summer months. We routinely patrol the beach to prevent drownings and perform first aid on people on the beach.
PINK AND BLUE SWIM, 2017 - PRESENT, Every year since 2017, I have helped organize the West Beach Pink and Blue Swim. It is an annual event containing a 200m, 500m, or 1km swim or 3km walk that raises money for breast and prostate cancer. As a member of the West Beach Surf Life Saving Club, I have previously helped with set up, pack up, and water cover during the event.
VINNIE’S WINTER SLEEP OUT, As a House Captain in both Middle School and Senior School, I helped organize the Immanuel Vinnies Winter Sleepout. The Vinnies Sleepout is an event run to give students a glimpse into the realities of homelessness. A group of students and teachers sleep outdoors using cardboard as their only form of shelter. I assisted with organizing meals and collecting donations for St Vincent de Paul.
SMITH FAMILY READING PROGRAM, For 2 terms, I volunteered to teach a child how to read 3 nights a week. The Smith Family Reading Program connects a child to a buddy over the phone who practices reading 3 nights a week to try and improve their literacy skills. I would teach the child pronunciation, definitions, and fluency of words and phrases.
JAPANESE MEGA TESTING, After completing stage 2 Japanese in year 11, I volunteered to do Japanese testing on year 6 students from Immanuel Primary School. The Mega Test is the final test for Japanese in year 6 and showcases the student’s ability to read, comprehend, and then speak Japanese. I would point out a word or phrase in Japanese which the student would have to read out to me. This required a good knowledge of language skills.
HOCKEY COACHING, 2019, During the winter season in 2019, I coached a hockey team of primary school-aged boys and girls. I attended a game and a training every week for 2 terms. I was required to come up with drills, provide feedback, and explain positions to the players.
