Throughout my experiences at Silverwater Women's Correctional Centre, I have consistently taken on senior roles such as C and B watch night senior, The Immediate Action Team (I.A.T SCO 1) and Reception. These opportunities have allowed me to develop essential skills including conflict resolution, exemplary communication skills, crisis management, integrity and ethics, organisation and security awareness. These skills are crucial for effective leadership in dynamic and static environments. First Class Correctional Officer

The Immediate Action Team (I.A.T)

  • Lead a team of correctional officers in responding to critical incidents within the facility
  • Develop and implement tactical plans to mitigate security threats and maintain good order and security of the centre
  • Coordinate closely with law enforcement agencies, medical services, and other stakeholders to ensure effective responses and resolution of incidents
  • Conduct thorough searches for contraband and weapons, utilizing both manual and electronic detection methods
  • Supervise inmate activities and movements to prevent disruptions and ensure compliance
  • Respond to critical or high-risk incidents whilst maintaining negotiation and de-escalation techniques
  • Facilitate controlled movements of high-risk inmates
  • Conduct search operations, both covert and overt
  • Ensure records are maintained to account for all authorized IAT equipment in the armoury
  • Ensure compliance and the proper chain of evidence is followed, regarding any contraband located and seized
  • Gather and analyze intel, threat reports to mitigate potential security breaches.

  • Conduct daily searches and musters to determine the continual presence of inmates
  • Locate and remove illegal and restricted substances and articles from inmates whilst undertaking searches
  • Supervise inmates' activities in their respective work and residential areas ensuring all activities, both directed and recreational, are conducted in accordance with equity and fairness
  • Supervising the behaviour and activities of offenders in accordance with the correctional centre routine/structured day
  • Regularly acting into the role of Night Senior on C and B watches.
  • Trained in Reception operating procedures including but not limited to; receiving inmates into the centre, bails, warrants and property.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in using the Offender integrated Management Systems (OIMS), report writing and IRM's. Training and extensive experience in the use of Body Worn Cameras and Body scanner technology.
  • Interacting with offenders, responding to their needs through the provision of services in an appropriate manner with relevant guidelines and rules
  • Undertake all custody related administrative duties within the area and provide clear and detailed reports to senior Officers
  • Adapting to managing and assisting the different categories of offenders through the provision of services and programs available.

  • Monitor inmates and ensure safety and security within the Correctional Centre. This includes overseeing activities, interactions, and ensuring adherence to centre rules and regulations.
  • Conducting regular security patrols, wing searches, cell searches, inmate searches and perimeter checks of the centre to prevent incidents, maintain order, and identify any potential security risks or breaches.
  • Respond to emergencies, such as altercations or medical incidents, and take appropriate action to assist other officers and Justice Health staff to manage and resolves these situations.
  • Safely escort inmates to and from various locations within the centre and outside of the centre as required such as medical appointments, hospital escorts, and special circumstances such as funeral escorts.
  • Assist with managing daily routines, including meal times, activities, work and other scheduled activities.
  • Address and de-escalate conflicts or disputes between inmates, applying appropriate correctional techniques to maintain order.
  • Maintain accurate records of inmate behaviour, incidents, and daily activities. Ensure all reports are completed in accordance with centre operating procedures.
  • Record details of security checks, movements, and other important observations in logbooks or electronic systems.
  • Participate in any required training and programs to stay current with correctional policies and procedures.

Australian Border Force Officer - Maritime Unit
