Registered Nurse in a busy15 bed Emergency department at Lismore Base Hospital. Areas included
shift coordinator, triage, all nursing resuscitation roles, acute and sub-acute areas and
mental health. Shift Coordinator, in charge of emergency department. The primary
objective of this role is to ensure safe and efficient functioning of the emergency
department for patients, staff and public within the department at any given time.
Responsibilities include allocation of staff to appropriate areas of need, ensuring skill
mix is safe and effective. Regular rotation to the primary resuscitation role. I am
competent in roles all expected of the senior resuscitation nurse. This position requires
me to work both independently and perform in team roles. In this role I am responsible
for the safe and effective nursing management of trauma patients, cardiac patients, acute
respiratory patients, paediatric patients and acute mental health patients. Acute and Sub-
acute areas manage and care for a wide variety of patients. Responsibilities include initial admission of the
patient into the department, this includes, accurate documentation, intravenous
cannulation, and cardiac monitoring. We dealt with a large demographic of society
including, aged patients, paediatric patients, indigenous patients and mental health
patients.
Registered Nurse in 35 bed Emergency Department on the Gold Coast. Areas included Resuscitation roles, Triage, Acute and Sub-acute trauma, Paediatric , Neurological, Psychiatric,
Minor procedure, Fast track, Observation ward. Resuscitation Team nurse allocates you
to one of three roles, A, B or C. Each role places the nurse with specific responsibilities
during resuscitation, primarily Airway, Drugs and Circulation. Usual team activation is
due to Life threatening Trauma and or Life threatening Medical emergencies. I have
been placed in all three positions.
Triage has two positions, Triage nurse and Clinical Initiative Nurse (CIN) .
Triage nurse is responsible for the safe and effective placement of patients within the
Department. The role presents a variety of challenges including bed shortages within the
Department, prolonged waiting time of lower category patients and also managing acute
Psychiatric presentations . The Triage role demands very good interpersonal skills and
draws on previous experience in similar positions. Gold Coast hospital uses the EDIS
system with which I am fully competent.
The CIN role involves implementing basic nursing care through to more invasive
procedures such as blood taking. CIN also liaises with the Flow Coordinator regarding
patient movement to and from triage.
Acute and sub- acute patients are allocated to specific areas within the department
Emergency is a 5 bed area which primarily deals with Category 2 and Category 3 patients.
However if the resuscitation room is being used then Category 1 patients are allocated to this area.
Acute is a 14 bed area which includes a 3 bed Pediatric bay a plaster bed and a minor
procedure room. There is also a 7 bed fast track area, and also a 10 bed Observation ward.
Roles in these areas can and do include assisting with the intubation of patients and
managing the ventilated patient. Care and management of acute trauma patients, acute
medical and surgical patients. Care and management of Paediatric patients.
As a registered nurse within the Gold Coast Emergency department I see it as my
professional responsibility to work cohesively as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure
that the patients’ needs are met and ongoing management it handed on when the patient is
transferred or discharged.
