Registered Nurse in 35 bed Emergency Department on the Gold Coast. Areas included Resuscitation roles, Triage, Acute and Sub-acute trauma, Paediatric , Neurological, Psychiatric,

to one of three roles, A, B or C. Each role places the nurse with specific responsibilities
during resuscitation, primarily Airway, Drugs and Circulation. Usual team activation is
due to Life threatening Trauma and or Life threatening Medical emergencies. I have
been placed in all three positions.
Triage has two positions, Triage nurse and Clinical Initiative Nurse (CIN) .
Triage nurse is responsible for the safe and effective placement of patients within the

Department, prolonged waiting time of lower category patients and also managing acute
Psychiatric presentations . The Triage role demands very good interpersonal skills and
draws on previous experience in similar positions. Gold Coast hospital uses the EDIS

The CIN role involves implementing basic nursing care through to more invasive
procedures such as blood taking. CIN also liaises with the Flow Coordinator regarding
patient movement to and from triage.
Acute and sub- acute patients are allocated to specific areas within the department
Emergency is a 5 bed area which primarily deals with Category 2 and Category 3 patients.
However if the resuscitation room is being used then Category 1 patients are allocated to this area.

Acute is a 14 bed area which includes a 3 bed Pediatric bay a plaster bed and a minor
procedure room. There is also a 7 bed fast track area, and also a 10 bed Observation ward.
Roles in these areas can and do include assisting with the intubation of patients and
managing the ventilated patient. Care and management of acute trauma patients, acute
