After achieving the five stars as an asset, Escondida was the first asset in getting the five stars for each of the operations, including Mine, Oxide, Concentrator and NPI. Due to a successful HSEQ strategy Escondida became a benchmark and received Chilean and international awards for its performance. Different initiatives to reinforce the culture around Safety and Excellence were implemented being the most relevant “Searching the Excellence.” With an important level of employee's participation and strong Leadership commitment, improvement ideas and suggestions from workers were collated. BHP Billiton CEO visited Escondida to give the final awards to worker's best ideas. Most relevant ideas were implemented and reduced Safety incidents. A specific initiative identified as “Mine of XXI century” was designed and implemented seeking opportunities to reduced cost through the identification of high-risk real and potential scenarios. This initiative finally resulted in significant cost reductions and focus areas for Safety, Health, and Environment. The analysis of collected data allowed the identification of almost two hundred activities or scenarios associated with fatality potential events. This information was relevant to the design and implementation of the SIGMEL system. External initiatives oriented to improve SHE system were successfully led, involving all major Chilean mining companies. The most relevant initiative was the creation and implementation of a training package for employees and contractor companies called ‘BAPREVER.' This initiative included the support of SERNAGEOMIN (Chilean mining authority). ‘A lesson of life' was a video prepared to motivate people and reinforce a Safety culture. Based on true fatal incidents at Escondida, the story focused on the after-event impacts of fatal incidents in families and other people's life.
