  • I am part of a team at Varsity Lakes Day Hospital booking Endoscopy procedures for patients requiring Upper and Lower Endoscopic procedures. This role involves assessing each patient prior to their booking to determine their suitability for treatment at the stand alone day surgery facility.
  • I ensure all patients are booked following the guidelines of the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Service Implementation Standards (GESIS), as well as hospital protocols and procedures. This is to ensure each patient has fair and equitable access while providing best practice processes.
  • I contribute within the team to ensure the patients are booked within the allotted time their category allows, and the procedure rooms are utilised efficiently.
  • I also attend to any cancellations and rebook their procedure accordingly,
  • This role requires knowledge of electronic systems to include: HBCIS, Systemview, Scheduling Appointment Book, and Telstra Messaging.
  • I effectively liaise with the Doctors and the Multidisciplinary teams involved in the patients care.

Registered Nurse – Day Surgery Unit Southport, QLD

  • I am part of the Day Surgery Unit second stage recovery where we discharge day surgery patients to home
  • The role entails ensuring the patients are suitable to go home, ensuring discharge criteria is met, such as: they have a support person with them for 24 post general anaesthetic, as well ensuring the patient has all their relevant documentation such as medical certificate, prescriptions, discharge instructions, and any planned outpatient appointment
  • Recently I have had the opportunity to learn the Co-ordinator /Clinical Nurse role within the Day Surgery Unit (2nd Phase Recovery) where I ensure discharge criteria is met, ensuring all their relevant post operative information requested by the operating surgeons is noted on their discharge information and communicated to the patients, liaising with members of the multidisciplinary teams, and co-ordinating the areas where the patients coming from Phase 1 recovery are assigned to.

  • I have gained valuable experience as a Cardiac scrub nurse in all aspects of cardiac surgeries including emergency sternal re-opening performed in ICU, cardiac ward, and theatre
  • I performed in the role of Clinical Nurse where I ensured effective working relationships, skill mix, providing support to junior and new staff, education, and respect for all team members
  • I ensured all policies, procedures, guidelines, and patient safety are always adhered too
  • Using a patient centred approach to care with evidence-based practice for effective and efficient care
  • I was responsible for preparing the cardiac scrub scout roster ensuring transparency, equality, and fairness, especially in delegating the cardiac on calls
  • I was also responsible for collating the cardiothoracic team on call roster while ensuring the appropriate stakeholders were in receipt of at the beginning of each week, any changes that were required I ensured they were delt with immediately and sent out to the appropriate stakeholders
  • In monitoring risk management, I ensured infection control guidelines are adhered to, critical incidents are reported, and fatigue risk is managed appropriately
  • I participated in quality improvement projects and ideas to not only benefit the cardiac specialty but also within the perioperative department to include the emergency theatre
  • I willingly performed in-service topics to benefit the perioperative staff in the event of emergency chest trauma sternal openings
  • I also liaised with the ICU Clinical Nurse Consultant for providing in-services for the ICU nurses who may be involved in re-opening of the sternum following cardiac surgery
  • I performed the Performance Development Plans (PDP) for the nursing staff within the cardiothoracic specialty
  • I have updated policy instruments as required
  • Recent updates include Emergency Chest Re-Open after Cardiac Surgery Document ID-PRO1848 and Cardiothoracic Surgery On Call Document ID PRO1339
  • I had to resign from this position as I could no longer stand for periods of time as a scrub nurse.
