Summary

Occupational therapy graduate seeking a challenging and rewarding position where I can apply and continue to improve my clinical skills and make a meaningful impact on the well-being of diverse populations. Furthermore, growing up with a sibling that required occupational therapy services, I experienced firsthand the impact that dedicated therapists can have on individual and their families, and it is my goal to offer these great services to others.

Placement: Occupational Therapy - Hand Therapy

Western Health (Sunshine & Footscray Hopsital)
09.2023 - 10.2023
  • Treated a caseload of up to 5-6 patients by the final week of placement. Independent initial assessments and reviews with patients (with distant oversight from supervisor) for management of fingertip injuries, mallet finger injuries, volar plate injuries and 5th metacarpal fractures.
  • Presented a tutorial/literature review to the hand therapy team about the current treatment of tuft fractures. Used this evidence to recommend alternative strategies regarding how this injury could be managed to potentially optimise efficiencies at Western Health in the hand therapy clinic.
  • Collaborated with orthopaedic surgeons and other healthcare professionals to coordinate post-operative rehabilitation.

Dual Placement: Occupational Therapy (CDAMS)

  • Cognitive Dementia and Memory Service (CDAMS) is a specialist multidisciplinary diagnostic, referral and educational service for people experiencing memory loss, or changes in their thinking/cognition.
  • Main role included obtaining corroborative history from patient carer/significant other/family members via phone call and in-person interview. Information gathered was used to assist multidisciplinary team with diagnosis and formulating appropriate care plans.
  • Provided patients and carers with education, support and information regarding adaptive aids/equipment (e.g. dementia phones, alarmed Dosette box, etc.) and strategies (e.g. labelling common areas, using checklists/planners, following similar routines each day, etc.) to improve independence at home.
  • Linked clients and their family to service providers and community supports (e.g. My Aged Care, Home and Community Care, Commonwealth Home Support Program and Dementia Australia).

Dual Placement: Occupational Therapy (CHSP)

  • CHSP is the “Commonwealth Home Support Program” and is a national program offering support to people aged 65+ with frailty and/or disability.
  • Conducted telehealth initial assessments, home assessments and provided intervention for clients at their homes. Most common intervention was equipment prescription (e.g. toilet surround frames, specialised recliner chairs, bidet seats, sock donners, personal alarms, dressing aids, etc.). Also provided guidance on how to safely use prescribed equipment.
  • Wrote 3 SWEP applications (2x recliner chairs and 1x bidet seat) with 100% of these applications being accepted.
  • Increased familiarity with services available to access funded equipment to prescribe to patients (SWEP, Carer Gateway, GEAT 2 GO, Chemtronics Direct)
  • Completed several minor home modification assessments for installation of rails, bidets, and ramps and obtained quotes from builders.

Placement: Occupational Therapist (Mental Health)

  • The Broadmeadows Community Care Unit (BCCU) is a short-medium term stay residential mental health service for adults aged between 26-64 with a primary mental health diagnosis, who have clear psychosocial recovery goals that require specialised support.
  • Prepared and co-facilitated group activities (e.g. Cooking, meal/budget planning, gardening, walking and bowling) to assist patients in developing their skills for independent living within the community. Adapted sessions and communication to meet cognitive level of client.
  • Developed experience conducting several mental state examinations (MSEs) and able to describe what has been observed accurately into documentation.
  • Provided handover in ISBAR format to nursing stuff after service provision with clients.

Project Placement: Occupational Therapy

Orygen Youth Health
07.2023 - 09.2023
  • Worked in coordination with the Refugee Access Service (RAS) team who focus on enhancing access to tertiary mental health services across Melbourne's northwest and west regions.
  • Purpose of project placement was to develop a document outlining non-NDIS disability supports that would assist clinicians in referring/linking individuals from asylum seekers/refugee backgrounds with disability (e.g. autism, intellectual disability, etc.) who cannot access NDIS services due to visa constraints. Information regarding beneficial services obtained via calling over 30 organisations.
  • Project sponsor reported satisfaction with project deliverable which, has now been circulated to all interested parties throughout Orygen.

  • Planned sessions in coordination with client, their family and occupational therapist. Facilitated these sessions independently.
  • Worked primarily with autism diagnosis. Main client goals consisted of learning to independently self-dress (tying shoe laces and doing buttons) and improve legibility of hand writing. Greatest achievement was seeing client able to tie their shoelaces independently.
  • Developed own resources to use with client that were based on resources client’s OT provided. Guidance and feedback provided from client’s OT to ensure quality of resources developed.
