• Assist in the conservation and presentation of the grounds and gardens of properties managed by the National Trust (NTVic), primarily Rippon Lea Estate and Como House and Garden
• Work in a diverse range of garden settings, including vegetable garden beds, an orchard, annual/perennial display beds, mixed shrubberies, shadehouses/glasshouses
• Undertake a full range of garden maintenance activities including:
⁃ plant selection, plant establishment and maintenance
⁃ hand-weeding, weed spraying
⁃ soil conditioning, mulching, composting
⁃ pest and disease control activities
⁃ pruning, hedging and topiary
⁃ raking, sweeping /blower-vac hard surfaces
⁃ propagation, potting on, stocking a retail nursery
⁃ mowing and edging lawns
⁃ maintaining automated irrigation systems, including repairing drip-line, servicing pumps, installing risers and sprinkler heads
⁃ hand watering nursery stock, conservatory plants, etc
• Supervise and mentor apprentices. Supervise and coordinate weekly volunteers of varying ages and abilities in the maintenance of NT gardens. Supervise and co-ordinate Green Army teams in the renovation of various areas of the Rippon Lea Estate
• Regular visitor interaction to provide historical details and assist in site orientation and information. Deliver regular garden tours for group bookings
• HSR (Health and safety Representative) for the NT Gardens team
• Manage 7 full-time staff and 2 part-time staff on the Grounds and Gardens crew in the maintenance and development of the landscapes of the Port Arthur Historic Site (PAHS) and the Coal Mines Historic Site
• Supervise 3-4 full time staff on the Cleaning Crew to ensure a high standard of presentation across the PAHS
• Develop maintenance schedules and delegate staff daily tasks accordingly
• Promote and encourage effective teamwork
• Recruit, train and supervise staff
• Participate as a member of the WHS committee. Ensure all workers are aware and comply with WHS standards
