In 30 years as a journalist, I have established myself as a writer, reporter, leader and manager across news and sport, from a one man band in a foreign bureau to leading an entire news operation of around 140 journalists.
As a reporter, I have covered major news and sport around the world in hard news reporting, features, colour and analysis pieces. I’m as comfortable writing about elections, natural disasters, terror attacks and royal weddings as I am about the Olympics, tennis and golf majors, Test cricket and international rugby.
I have reported from Africa, Europe, South America, the Caribbean, Asia, the Pacific and Antarctica. With that experience comes the ability to judge character, identify what is and isn't news, what works as a story and how to develop it - either for myself or in guiding others.
Working for Australia’s national news agency, Australian Associated Press, the emphasis was always on speed and accuracy, filing urgent copy for radio and digital subscribers which was updated as stories unfolded and ultimately became the essential complete stories for print.
I’ve covered general elections in the UK and Australia, the 2005 London bombings, the royal weddings of Prince Frederik of Denmark and Mary Donaldson and that of Prince Charles and Camilla, CHOGM in Nigeria, the 90th anniversary of ANZAC Day in 2005 in Turkey, the 2006 Fiji coup, the Sydney, Athens, London and Rio Olympics, Commonwealth Games, international cricket and rugby, world athletics and cycling championships, world title fights, tennis and golf majors.
An inclusive and collaborative leader, I understand the value of working as a team, from an editor's and reporter's perspective and in the last few years have been at the heart of the evolution of the roles played by digital and social media in news delivery.
