Academic Employment

  • Casual Academic, Murdoch University, Perth, February 2024 –, Currently, I am serving as a tutor for a master's program (COD503) in community development and an undergraduate unit for career learning (MSP 100). My tasks include facilitating tutorial sessions and grading assignments closely following the unit coordinators’ instructions.
  • School Development Consultant, Paro Elementary School, Bhutan, June – Dec. 2023, Following my master’s degree with a major in Education and Human Resource Development from Japan, I was recruited as a short fixed-term consultant by Paro Elementary School to study and address their declining enrolment concerns. I successfully conducted market research, gathering insights into evolving educational trends and parents’ preferences for a holistic schooling approach. I did a comprehensive assessment of existing educational programs, benchmarking them against offerings in leading private and public schools. Based on the aforementioned methods, I developed a strategic roadmap for school expansion in close collaboration with school leadership, teachers, and parents.
  • ESL Teacher, SEIHA English Academy, Japan, June 2022 – February 2023, During my post-graduate studies in Japan, I was recruited by SEIHA English Academy as a part-time English teacher. I planned and executed lessons for students learning English as a foreign language, incorporating outdoor lessons and excursions with a central theme of enhancing English competencies. Additionally, I utilised play-based learning to make English language acquisition enjoyable and engaging for younger students.
  • Vice Principal, ELC High School, Bhutan, January 2016 – December 2020, In 2015, I was offered the position of vice principal at ELC High School, which opened in 2016. ELC High School's vision of ‘EduCaring for Universal Happiness and Wellbeing’ closely aligned with my educational philosophy. As part of the founding leadership team, I played a crucial role in establishing ELC High as one of the premier private schools in Bhutan, championing innovative experiential education alongside the mandated government curriculum. From naming the school to developing core policies, from recruiting and training teachers to implementing curriculum mandates, and from fostering local and international educational partnerships to hosting exchange programs, I played a crucial role in the inception and strong foundation of ELC High, on which the school is flourishing today. Today, ELC High is highly regarded for its commitment to innovative learning programs. It has partnered with His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Mind and Life Institute, the Contentment Foundation, and Design for Change, among other global and local institutions. Alternative Education

Born out of my late wife’s and my ardent wish to bridge the divide between rural and urban students of Bhutan through an experiential community-based learning platform, I founded Camp Rural-Urban Friendship (RUF) in 2014. During our service as novice teachers in a remote school, we encountered numerous limitations of classroom learning, which often failed to meet children’s diverse learning needs and to make learning fun and meaningful. Our exploration of an alternative learning approach ultimately resulted in the creation of Camp RUF., I have played a pivotal role in conceptualising, designing and successfully establishing Camp RUF as an inclusive and sought-after out-of-school engagement program in Bhutan. I assembled a core team of facilitators from diverse backgrounds, ensuring the camp ran smoothly from 2014 to 2022. My main contribution was attracting funding from various individuals and organisations each year. This experience has fuelled my passion for transforming Bhutan's education landscape by advocating for alternative education approaches. Extensive experience running Camp RUF for over nine years, catering to over 1,000 students, has nurtured my passion for alternative education and experiential learning. This background equips me with the knowledge and insights needed for my proposed research area.

Projects

Education Consultant, Big-Yan Consulting, Bhutan, November 2019 – March 2020, Co-Investigator, Review, Analyse, and Assess the Education Monitoring Information System (EMIS) of the Ministry of Education and Skills Development. Took part in the research design and data collection through interviews, group consultations, policy analysis, and data analysis using the SWOT framework. As the core team member, I made several research report presentations at the ministry level. The project finally provided a data-driven Terms of Reference for improving the existing system. The new version of the EMIS in Bhutan was revamped based on the TOR we provided.
